“The setting-off point for our daughter's wedding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2011

Our family booked the whole of the Cotswold House guesthouse to be the setting-off point for our daughter's wedding in one of the Colleges. Throughout our stay, Friday to Sunday, Derek & Hilary and all their staff made us welcome, allowed us open use of the whole house, & could not have done more to give the bride a home-from-home send-off. Their hospitality meant that we could relax the night before - 16 of us descended on one of the nearby restaurants they recommended - & also take advantage of their local knowledge on the big day itself. In addition to the advising the driver of the Wedding Car on negotiating his way into the College through Saturday morning traffic, we booked taxis from a local firm on their recommendation to take the remaining guests to the wedding & reception & back in the evening. And the breakfasts were superb! Choice of fruit, cereals, porridge, any combination of the cooked menu, as much toast as you could eat & endless supplies of coffee & tea - if we'd been at home, I would have been a total wreck trying to do all that and get ready for the wedding! We are very grateful to everyone there for "making" our daughter's day!

This is a great B & B in a very convenient location. It is on a direct bus route to the Oxford city centre, about a 15 minute ride and the bus drops you right in the centre. The owners are very friendly and helpful, tea and cookies served on arrival and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Another plus - free wi-fi! Also free parking. Full English breakfast is served if requried and there is also a good selection of cereals and fresh fruit. Also there is a Starbuck within walking distance as well as a good selection of eating places and other shops.

This guest-house is charmingly olde-worlde and offers a haven of rest in a bustling, busy city. The welcome and hospitality is noteworthy, nothing is too much bother. The breakfast is delicious! It is situated in a most attractive - and convenient (frequent buses) - part of Oxford.
Looking for a place to stay while in Oxford? This is it! C.

We have to agree somewhat with the previous less enthusiastic review ('Tripadvisor, Where Were You?') as well as reporting some good points about this place. On the downside it is a bit tatty and in need of maintenance; the rooms were fine but cluttered (unnecessary built-in units, unnecesesary, quite loudly-humming fridge containing UHT milk and water, creaky old headboards), the decor gloomy and dated (lots of silk flowers) and several annoying maintenance issues like room door lock not working well, and window lock coming away so it was hard to shut window securely. Carpets were clean but stained, eiderdowns very torn and shower mat mouldy. Breakfast was adequate with pleasant service but limited range and involved ordering (even cereals) rather than having cold stuff laid out like a buffet, as at many places. On the upside, it was otherwise very clean, with ample towels and pleasant unintrusive hosts, and the telly worked well. We concluded that maybe places don't have to compete in a popular place like Oxford, and it seemed pretty pricey for the standard. We stay in a lot of B&Bs and this is a bit down-at-heel and basic.

Room Tip: Go at the back to avoid road noise

The Cotswold House was an OK stay. It has relatively small rooms for not too competitive prices, but they are clean and the beds are relatively comfortable, though the mattress is quite hard. The breakfast is the same every day (bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs and a couple oftoasts), and I got tired of it on my second day of a four day stay. The staff is friendly and forthcoming. A relatively good value for money, about a 15 min drive to Oxford center.
