This is the first time I've ever been inspired to write a tripadvisor review, but our experience here was so poor I felt the need to get it off my chest. Where to start....The hotel blurb says they have a tradition of hospitality starting in 1497. What they fail to mention is that this tradition probably stopped in 1498. We were assured when we called the night before that a slightly earlier check in (1pm rather than 2pm as we needed to get changed before heading off to a wedding) wouldn't be a problem. But on arrival it seemed to be a very big problem indeed. The receptionist just kept on saying "not possible, not possible" but without explaining why, and said that there was no manager avaialble to help. He did helpfully suggest we could use the toilets in the public bar, which is what we had to do- no fun with a 6 month old child.
The room- a temperature that your average Amazonian tribesman would have found a bit on the steamy side, and the smell... over-powering cheap floral air-"freshener" with a hint of raw sewerage. Open the window though to clear the air and all the noise you would expect overlooking the busy public bar smoking area. What else- a very big room but not matched by the bed size- a pair of vacuum packed pygmies would have struggled for sleeping space. Flimsy furniture, and pictures bought in bulk from a seaside charity shop in 1962.
The bathroom- seriously scalding water, and an interior designer's worst nightmare- a curious mix of cod-Victoriana, 1970s, and with a splash of ikea for good measure.
Finally breakfast- avearge B&B fare, although the black pudding slices could have done with 10 minutes less in the deep fat frier. Alternatively they would have doubled up nicely as coasters or mini-frisbees. One bright spot though was the waitress service at breakfast- lovely people.
To conclude, yes we weren't paying big bucks so I can forgive the decor. But the over-riding impression was a lack of TLC and management that really doesn't care whether your stay is a good one or whether you come back or not. Hence the review... There, I've got it off my chest....
