“Service very poor food was good when it eventually arrived”
Reviewed 19 June 2011

The staff were very helpful and apologetic, this did not make the experience one that I would be willing to repeat again. The food took an age to arrive despite the fact that there were only 8 people in the restaurant. The food that arrived was not as described on the menu. The main course arrived in 2 parts, the veg arrived 15 minutes after the meat. It took over 30 minutes to bring a drink to the table.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

The hotel is located on a busy road but the noise levels were okay. The dated television in the room we were allocated did not work so we transferred rooms. The dated television in this room worked but we could only access 3 channels. Whilst a television would not normally be a priority we did want to watch the 6 nations game !! The bedrooms we saw were very tired and although the bathroom looked as if it had recently been refurbished there were no 'extras'. As we entered the dining room for breakfast the other 2 sets of guests were leaving so it was just my husband and myself to be served. We helped ourselves to a bowl of ceral which was a bit soggy and ordered our cooked breakfast and hot drinks. The breakfast took a while to arrive which was a bit astonishing as I had just one small slice of bacon, a spoonful of beans, one hash brown and a half slice of black pudding (a half slice - I kid you not). My husband had beans which he hadn't ordered and no egg, which he had. The plates and the food were cold. We still hadn't had our tea or coffee. We sent the food back to be heated - it was just about warm when it was returned and tasted of old grease. We ordered toast which was of the thin white-sliced variety. Altogether the hotel felt very 'mean' and I would not return. We paid £110.00 - not value for money. There are lots of other nice places to stay in this locality so I would say that they need to up their game to attract returnees.

I would just like to say that my boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights. We had an amazing time. We had dinner there the second night and it was lovely. The staff and the whole experience was incredible. It was our first time in Burford and we will definatly be coming back to see you all again. Everything was brilliant. Thankyou.

This is for the restaurant only as we have not stayed there (we are fairly local)

We were looking forward to trying the restaurant, but it was a big let-down. Despite the fact that there was only 1 other couple there, it took 40 minutes from placing the order for our food to arrive. The plates were cold and so were my carrots. I pointed this out to the single waiter/bar person, and he did bring some more....but by the time he did I'd almost finished my main course. The potatoes were tepid but at least the chicken was hot (although very short of the stilton that was supposed to be in the middle!) My partner chose belly pork, and got one tiny piece, not even as big as a pork chop.

We had to ask to see the dessert menu and what we were given was a list of about 5 boring looking puddings (apple crumble, toffee pudding etc- you know, the sort of thing you can pick up in the supermarket) scribbled in biro on a scrap of paper. We declined. We were not offered coffee or anything else.

The wine by the glass was reasonable quality (not great, but fine, albeit a bit pricey), but the fruit juce from a jug was obviously supermarket own brand quality. We observed that the bar was poorly stocked, which we note other people have commented on.

It took one and 3/4 hours therefore to eat one disappointing main course. It's a pity because the dining room was pleasant and warm with a nice atmosphere. For what we got we think it was way over priced. The young man serving was pleasant enough, but in no way was he either speedy or pro-active - he should watch "Michael Roux's Service" on BBC2 for some ideas. This place seems to us to be run on a shoe string, and it shows. Sorry, but could not recommend - we won't be going back.

We stayed in the four poster bedroom, was lovely, yes we agree that the traffic was a bit noisy, however the hotel and the welcome we received was second to none, Lawrence looked after us and always had a smile to greet us with. So to say we would recommend this lovely hotel to anyone. Lee and Tina Hoxley.
