Owner description: No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

“Bird's eye view of Medieval York”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2012

Taking a walk around the top is a fun way to gain perspective on a town that retains so much of its Medieval presence. The wall is so well preserved, even from ground level it is a thrill to be so close to ancient gates, towers, even a barbican, and see such beautiful preservation.

“A great way to see York and keep fit, all free of charge!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2012

Allow yourself at least 2 hours to walk all of the wall and the gaps. If you're a slow walker and want to stop off along the way you need another hour. Alternatively, just do the best bits either across the road from the railway station or around the side and the back of the Minster.

“A good way to view the city and learn a bit about the geography.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

We do this on a regular basis. Sometimes we complete the circuit and others we 'hop on and hop off' depending on where we are going. The stretch behind the Minster is often the busiest but the most worthwhile for views. Love the view over the Quilt Museum and New School House Gallery. The gardens designed by the York Conservation Trust look wonderful at any time of year and they are open to the public.
