Lovely cottage in the heart of old Whitby. Positioned down a quiet "yard" off of Church Street, the moment you enter the small cottage garden, you are struck by the piece and quiet. The cottage itself is delightful, set over three floors it is full of character. We had a delightful four nights staying in Shilling cottage.
This cottage is centrally located off church street and so everything is close, it also has a small garden with a table and chairs to sit out which is a bonus in Whitby. I had a few gripes such as the hot tap in the bath was hard to turn off, it was difficult to sit around the dining table as it was too low, and the tv satellite signal went off intermittently when it was windy, all these things were minor nuisances and in no way spoiled a lovely weekend in Whitby, but the main problem which I suspect is not for the owner to solve is there was a awful pong of dead fish outside the front door (not the Blackburn's yard entrance), so much so that we bought a air freshener to mask it and tried to open the front door as little as possible! It was a hot weekend and I smelt the same smell elsewhere in Whitby so I suspect its a problem with the drains in that area, but the smell only affected the ground floor and not the bedrooms, and only if you opened the front door! The owner was very nice and helpful but as she was in Leeds it was not possible for her to attend to these minor problems, when we visit again I would probably look for a cottage on the ground floor (without steps) as my wife found the steps up to the cottage difficult.
Nice little cottage, everything within easy walking distance. Hidden away from the main street so nice and quiet. Would use again.
Had a lovely few days in Whitby, staying in Shilling Cottage. We stayed in the cottage last summer and couldn't wait to come back. The cottage is brilliantly situated in the heart of Whitby but very conveniently hidden away through one of the alleyways on Church Street. Shilling Cottage is clean, comfortable and very well-equipped. Lovely comfy beds and a very cosy feel throughout. Will definately be returning.
