This was my third visit to Whitby over the years and I had never seen this church open before. Inside it was quite unusual with pews that were boxed in - apparently the families would have keys to their own pews. Also was a high pulpit, apparently the inspiration for Captain Cook to invent the 'crows nest' (according to our hotel - see my other review). Definitely worth having a look around.

This is a very interesting and unusual church as all the pews are boxed in. I have never been in a church that still has pew like this. I would recommend a visit. I

Stopped off at the church by chance on way to the abbey and we’re glad we did as it was a most interesting place which should not be missed. The enclosed pews of various shapes and sizes and status fill the ground floor and balcony which overlook a three tier pulpit. Most unusual and fascinating. Some of the upstairs pews have external timber clad stairs adding to it’s uniqueness. Finally the surrounding graveyard offers fine views of the harbour.

I am not one for church visits on holiday but loved this. The man working at the gift shop caught us wondering about the boxes around the pews and took a few minutes to explain the building and history of the place. The story was absolutely fascinating and I was so glad we bumped into him. He needs to do quick tours for a couple of quid rather than flogging bookmarks in the vestibule.

An interesting and well cared for church; very unusual interior with Georgian pews intact. Fantastic headland position
