We come to Whitby every year and Humble Pie 'n' Mash is our favourite place to visit due to the AMAZING pies (we usually take some home for the freezer too), jam roly poly & the dog friendly atmosphere.

This place is an absolute gem and I would recommend to all those looking for a cosy little treat to try this place. Cheap, cheerful, good old fashioned, delightful, with music to suit the decor and atmosphere. PERFECT!!!

For all those moaning about dogs (including wet ones) may I suggest that they visit an alternative holiday destination?! Whitby is a dog walkers haven and hygiene wise... most dogs are probably more hygienic than some people I know!!! However Humble Pie does have a dog free section upstairs for those not so keen on our K9 friends. Nice to hear the owners are sticking to their guns and keeping Pie n Mash a dog friendly place to visit!!

Thank you! Its a fine line keeping everyone happy. I find we get the most problems with Dogs who Smoke. Inside, outside? its a tough one!

This was our (with my wife) first visit to the Humble Pie Shop, what a great find, I don't know how many times I've walked past before but from now on I will be going in at least once every Whitby visit.

It was cold wet & windy outside but as soon as you walked in the glow from the embers in the inglenook fireplace made you feel warm & welcome.

The downstairs room as a nice homely atmosphere with several small tables a further room is available upstairs.

We both had the Lamb & Rosemary Pies which came with a nice creamy mash, peas & gravy, served in an enamel dish along with the setting it all seemed just perfect.

The food itself was excellent a very nice taste to the lamb, great pastry and a delicious mash and what great value.

Will be back very soon for more

Called in the other day, they hadn't been open long and we were one of the first lot of customers, the service was friendly and speedy as always, the place spotlessly clean and warm on a cold rainy day..as always.
Unfortunately,we were disappointed with our food, and VERY surprised to be so.
The pastry which is usually melt-in-the mouth gorgeous was hard, and the filling wasn't as tasty as it usually is,nor was the gravy...i actually hate to say this...but it seemed like the pie had been warmed up,..sorry to have to say that....The mash did have the odd lump but this didn't bother us as much as the fact that it was rather tasteless,no seasoning or butter perhaps ? A new cook ?...someone on holiday ?
In general,we would have mentioned our complaints at the time, but as the place was filling up with customers we didn't want to rock the boat,so to speak ,and it would have been difficult to do so without alerting the other customers and possibly putting them off.
This is constructive critisism, and in no way would we stop going,we've had consistently brilliant food at Humble Pie,perhaps it was just an off day that can truely be forgiven because it was a one-off.We're looking forward to visiting again soon.
Incidentally,as a dog owner,we have three, including 2 very hairy ones, and a chap who would be bigger than the tables !...we wouldn't dream of taking them into an eatery for obvious reasons,as we're local this is'nt a problem for us as they're at home...it's lovely to see that dogs are welcome here, but i have to say that it can be off-putting for some people if they happen to find themselves sitting next to a very often wet, smelly dog...So you folks who wish to take your dogs to lunch with you,..do so with a little common sense and consideration for other diners who may not be used to the aroma of eau-de-dog or having a huge snout peering over the edge of their table to examine what's on their plates !! But well done Dave for sticking up for our canine friends and their owners.Great to see beans on the menu too,and we think it's commendable that you take the time to read reviews and take on board customers comments and suggestions....Thankyou.

Thanks for the review, i have messaged you for a bit more info.
I can assure you that any pies not sold are either chucked out ( i hate doing that and love to surprise tourists with a free tea) or given to the staff at Mr chips over the road. We generally don't have much waste as we tend to cook to order at night..

Anyway once i get some more info off you, we can see what's gone wrong and put it right..

Thanks for the feedback
