“Vegan breakfast is the stuff of dreams...”
Review of Timberhill Bakery

Timberhill Bakery
Ranked #4 of 81 Quick Bites in Norwich
Certificate of Excellence
Description: We're a small independently run and owned Sourdough Bakery Cafe making sourdough bread from organic ingredients, from scratch every day. Everything we sell is made here on site by our small team of dedicated bakers in the city centre of Norwich, between John Lewis and Marks and Spencer. We are not a traditional cafe offering cooked breakfasts and the like but we are trying to do things a little differently. We have a little menu which is (unsurprisingly) bread-based with the best sourdough toasties in the UK, and an innovative range of savoury muffins and cakes which are now all dairy free or vegan. Our coffee is also a little different to the norm - punchy flavour and made using organic beans and organic milk. We're mid-sized (the cafe seats 35 plus another 18 outside) and open Tuesday to Saturdays 8am to 3pm (4pm Saturdays). We are closed on Sundays and Mondays preparing the sourdough, soup, toasties, cakes, etc etc for the rest of the week. Hope to see you soon, cheers, Mike.

And I am not even vegan!!

Every time I am in Norwich for the day I always pop by for a tasty lunch! The menu is varied but not excessive so there is plenty to choose from. The cakes are delicious so much so that I never manage to leave without buying some to take home. The customer service has always been polite and efficient.

Hi Little H - the Vegan breakfast toastie is often outselling the meat-based breakfast toasties....and not all of them are bought by vegans. Hopefully we're breaking down the barriers to great vegan food just by making things taste as good as their meat alternatives. Anyway, really pleased you got great service as well as we aim to take service as seriously as the food! Cheers, Mike

Really enjoyed my first visit for lunch - salt beef toastie with cheese and a fabulous strong coffee. Cakes were brilliant and the takeaway bread historic.

Topped off by superbly friendly young staff. Very crowded on a Saturday lunchtime but just managed to get a small table. It seems a bit chaotic - but I would go there every day !

Thank steve w

Hi Steve, thanks for taking the time to review us and really glad you enjoyed your salt beef toastie and coffee.
Yes that's definitely a fair comment that it can get a bit chaotic on Saturdays so thanks for bearing with us. We are trying to maintain the standards during what can be very busy days!
See you soon!
Cheers, Mike

We went here after my daughter recommended it for lunch. Both of us had the open sandwiches and were impressed with the quality of the food and service. We'll definitely be going again.

Vegan cake (you would never know it), not overly sweet. Yum. Service was great, and people warm and welcoming. The bread looked amazing. I am going back...

Hi Trail43693216105, thanks for such a lovely review.
Glad you like the cake - we're trying to offer some cakes that are just sweet enough alongside the traditional super-sweet alternative. Really pleased we gave you a nice welcome - hope you call in again soon!
Cheers

Delicious gluten free cakes, it can be hard to find things that are gluten free AND edible. But these were amazing!! Also lots of varieties of freshly baked bread. Also very yummy!!

Hi there, thanks for such a great review.

Yes, a couple of our cakes are made with gluten free ingredients but you really can't tell. We can't call them "gluten free cakes" as, like everything we sell, they are made here on the premises where we handle flour so there is a tiny risk of cross contamination with gluten.

The cakes we picked to make with gluten free ingredients (Brownies and Florentines) were ones where we knew there would be no compromise on flavour and texture so everyone could enjoy them, not just customers following a gluten free diet.

Brownies inherently don't need much gluten structure so ours really can stand toe to toe with gluten-containing ones, and our florentines actually taste better than when made with modern wheat, which was a nice, unintentional surprise.

The rest of our cakes, scones and muffins are all made with 100% spelt flour so they are lower in gluten than cakes made with modern wheat and suitable for those of you with a gluten intolerance (this is an increasing number of people). We had to tweak and re-tweak the recipes to get good texture and structure, but then that's our idea of fun . . . (seriously).

Hope to see you again soon!
Cheers, Mike
