My husband and I had been at The Cheltenham Gold Cup and were staying in London, not far from Claridges.
Alarm bells should of gone off when we phoned half an hour before we arrived to find they had a number of seats left for dinner.(All our other favourite restaurants were fully booked)
We used to live in SE and a treat was always a bottle of champagne in the piano bar followed by dinner, then it was Gordon Ramsay who headed up the kitchen.
So we thought it would be a real treat to re visit.
We were shown in through a very odd velvet doorway, and taken to our seats, by very attentive staff and shown the menu again by very informative front of house staff.
Our sommelier arrived with a very large folder containing all the wines ranging from £70-£29,000. She was very helpful and chose a bottle of champagne for us, which was lovely.
The menu is sold on being natural and sourced from The British
We are lucky enough to have eaten in some of the best restaurants and experienced fine dining around the world, so feel able to compare and criticise fairly.
The food is beautifully prepared, but was so disappointing in taste.Stewed rabbit, with crumpet and smoked eel, brill with sunflower seeds were all tasteless and at this point we were wishing Mr Ramsey was back in the kitchen.
Pudding didn’t get any better- Yorkshire rhubarb, I Love, so was so looking forward to it.It arrived under a glass closh with frozen ice, so dramatic yes! The 3 pieces of rhubarb could of covered my thumb nail and we covered in dry rose petals. Was like eating a plate of pot pourri. Finally, carrot sorbet, with coffee cake and granola. We didn’t eat the carrot sorbet.
We had an American couple next door who had just arrived and were staying in the hotel so we’re treating themselves, they too were struggling to work out the menu.
This became an incredibly expensive mistake on our behalf, and we will not return.
We googled and read the reviews sadly too late, and perhaps we wouldn’t have gone.
Time to go back to basics and cook good quality food well and not mess around with it too much!
