“Bangkok to Singapore Orient express is the best thing I have ever done”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

From the moment you are registered on platform 12 at Hualapong station in Bangkok to your arrival in Woodlands Singapore- you will surely find a major tick in your "things to do before you die" list.
Staff: Best i have ever encountered in any trip, holiday or visit anywhere.
Food: As good as any top restaurant in any major city in the world.
Entertainment: Depends on crowd- ours was up for a party which made it great fun from start to finsih - and made some great new friends.
Room: Booked state room - which was fantastic, plenty of room for all you need to do and very very comfortable.
Stops: River Kwai and Penang in Malaysia excellent - shorter than expected due to delays - but still enough time to enjoy the experience.
Scenery: excellent scenery - can get a bit samey at times- but even sitting inside the bar at the back of the train drinking a cup of tea, a beer, glass of wine- or whatever and watching the world go by while chatting to new made friends was just perfect.
Ride: very bumby first night- but as the track got better entering Malaysia side - it evened out. So no sleep first night- but nights 2 and 3 was just fine.
Piano lounge: Excellent way to end the night- Peter on piano would play most tunes you asked for. We had a party and danced, sang and drank til the wee small hours- especially on the final evening.

“The Singapore Bangkok Eastern and Orient Express”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2012

This review needs to be sorted out as it refers to 2 different trains.

This trip is a curates egg; what ever you do don't book into the Pullman, if you can't afford a better cabin don't go. The Pullman's are small, no; very small almost impossible to move in or get changed. ( I used to travel from Nairobi to Mombasa in the 50's on the boat train in better comfort).

The company needs to decide if they are going to sell a luxury trip; if so they have to move these carriages into a siding as they are not fit for purpose.
The unsuitability is exacerbated by the use of a narrow gauge railway with very old lines causing the whole train to rock and roll. If you are unlucky to be in the rear cabins the breaking adds to discomfort.

Having given you the negatives the staff are fantastic and the public room are great. The food produced was exceptional thanks to the Executive Chef and his brilliant cooks.

“Bangkok to Singapore - Luxurious Adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2012

Step back in time and enjoy what train travel must have been like in days of old. I loved that onboard dress was elegant casual, a nice break from sloppy casual (tennie shoes, oversized shorts, gym clothing) one often sees while traveling.

If resources permit, opt for a state room not the Pullman. Even with a state room consider packing only what you 'll need for the train ride. (Before boarding, they offer you the option to place extra luggage in inboard storage, take advantage of it or you'll wish you had.) An additional piece of luggage in small quarters makes for clutter and tripping danger when the train lurches occasionally.

Loved that upon leaving our cabin, we'd return and find they'd not only neatened the room but also found more efficient wats to store your belongings. Cabin service is excellent.

Overall the food is sumptuous. If you enjoy meeting fellow travelers, meals offer you the chance to be seated with new people. Although this was a romantic trip we enjoyed sharing our table with different couples. You can also opt for a late or early dinner, we ate late and found the bar car merrier with each passing hour. The pianist is excellent and took song requests from guests. His repertoire was expansive, accommodating all musical genres.

Tours at various stops en route are an appropriate length; we felt we had a chance to enjoy the River Kwai, trip into Penang without feeling rushed. Wish there had been a stop in Kuala Lumpur. (Remember to tip the guides, we saw many who did not.)

Our Orient Express trip was bookended by stays at St. Regis hotels which contributed to a cosseted and luxurious experience. The pampering we experienced on this trip made it hard to return to everyday hustle and bustle. Hope to be able to enjoy another Eastern and Orient Express journey and highly recommend.

“Honeymoon phase 3 Venice to Paris on Orient Express”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2012

We arrived at the train station in Venice and witnessed this magnificent train slowing to a stop.
The boarding takes place once all the hand picked provisions are on board.
Our steward shows us to our cabin, small but wow amazing. Attention to detail is wonderful, floor to ceiling there is something that catches your eye.
The restaurant cars, the piano bar oh everything about this train is just breathtaking.
We have a simply delicious meal and the wines are wonderful.
The scenery again breathtaking.
The journey is over far to quickly.
Expensive but a trip that will always be a very special treat.
Lovely memories.
All we expected and lots lots more.
