I am very impressed with Southwark and recommend anyone new to London to explore this vibrant area south of the river. One can easily access it by walking over one of the several bridges from the north bank or by underground or bus. There are many sights to take in and explore including Southwark Cathedral, The Shard, Borough Market, the Tate Modern, the Globe and much more of present day and historic interest. Organised walks and tours are possible - I recommend checking the website for Southwark tours and walking routes. There are countless good restaurants, cafes and bars in the area too.

Even though this area is perpetually overcrowded and despite my distaste for crowds, Southwark remains one of my favorite places in one of my favorite cities. Art and culture, history, theatre, dining--it's all here. The Globe and the Tate Modern are great, but I also highly recommend the indoor Wanamaker theatre for an experience of indoor, candlelit theatre as it was in the early modern (i.e., Renaissance) period. Or, you can simply wander and take in the views from the river bank.

Loads of things to see and do in Southwark. Great area to wander round, housing the Shard, Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. Many places to pop in and browse.

Bridge to be crossed by feet. It offers amazing sight on the Thames so it's a wonderful place for taking a good picture. Advised.
