In March 2012 I went to Move It (dance conference) and stayed at Piccadilly Backpackers.
Before my trip I searched for reviews on this hostel here on TripAdvisor and must say I was not impressed but I was travelling with a group of 20 people so I didn't really have a choice. Now that I am back home I can't honestly say that I did not like it, in my experience it is a lot better than what some of the reviews on here inform.
Since I went to London only to attend that conference I wasn't at the hostel much so I don't have a lot of experience of the staff or service but I can say that there was never any trouble, even though we were quite a large group, everything went smoothly I'd say.
Ok maybe this isn't the cleanest hostel but it didn't bother me much...just a tiny bit...but I didn't see any bugs or anything like that :) Bathroom was just average - nothing disgusting. The floor where the showers are is ALWAYS wet...and, oh yeah, the showers are really small...and I mean REALLY small, it is hard to move around just to put shampoo in your hair.
The beds are very different, considering comfort. The room I stayed in had two bunk beds, two mattresses were all right - you could feel the springs a little bit, one was really good and one had springs just ready to pop out any minute.
The only thing I can say that I did not like was that the elevator is extreeeemely slow. Maybe if there were only 3 travelling together you would take the elevator or you were going to the 10th floor or something like that but there were 20 of us (we would probably take around 10 hours going up and down with the elevator) going to the 4th floor...that's 80 steps...with a bag that weighs 16 kgs. My arms were sore...all I can say. I can only imagine the pain if we would've been at a higher floor.
