“Excellent location, great food and service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2012

Love this hotel! 5 minutes to Westminster Abbey etc., if that. Big Bus tour bus stops right outside hotel - great tour bus. Try the pies they are really good. Had a superior room and it was perfect - four poster bed, chocolate on the pillow, very clean and nice. Don't know what the cheaper rooms are like.
Only problem I had was I asked for a wake-up call at 5:00am and a taxi at 6;00am and didn't get call until 6:00am when taxi was there! So double check your wake up call.
Would definately stay there again and am recommending it to everyone I know. Thank you!

Room Tip: Get a superior room. There was construction but I was so tired after walking all day it didn't...

You can't get better locations than this if you want to see Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace etc as it is all just around the corner. If it is pubs/restaurants/nightlife you are interested in then this isn't for you as Piccadilly is probably the nearest place to eat and most places are fairly pricey around there and it is a good 20 minute walk. There is little choice of pubs/cafes/restaurants or nightlife around here The room was very small but nicely decorated. We looked straight out onto scaffolding work due to building repairs being carried out on the hotel next door, but there was no noise whilst we stayed there. However I could hear all of the movements of the surrounding rooms particularly as they walked around their room on the floor above us, which was a shame. The air con is very loud and coupled with the noise from the other rooms I had trouble sleeping and wasn't very relaxed when we left! The breakfast was nice but we were a bit disappointed that we had to pay a supplement for a cooked breakfast when we had already paid £140 for the room. Also the staff were very pleasant but some of the ladies did not speak much english at all and we had great difficulty explaining to them what we wanted. We had booked to eat in the bar downstairs in the evening but the barmaid didn't understand this when we explained to her and as it was a Friday night the bar was heaving with people just having a drink, nobody else was eating, it was extremely crowded and loud and so we chose to go somewhere else. This was a shame as the bar is lovely and was one of the reasons we had booked there. The hotel should think about sealing off an area for dining only, especially for hotel guests. Hotel was nice enough and the location made this a great stay as we could sightsee all of the places we wished to but I was disappointed with some things and think there would be other hotels that were better value for money.

My partner and I stayed here in February - I had booked for one night and we didn't want to leave the place so stayed for another! I had asked for a couple of special requests which the staff had fulfilled perfectly. Our room was at the front of the hotel - no problems with noise - and the room itself was immaculate. The bed was a great size with a good, firm mattress and comfortable pillows. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, toilettries of good quality and bathrobes perfect.
The bar downstairs serves an excellent selection of wines and beers at a reasonable cost. Breakfast was plentiful and good value. The location of the hotel makes it ideal for any stay in central London. It's so near to St James tube but only a few minutes's walk to Westminster and a few more minutes to Trafalgar Sqauare, theatreland etc or a few minutes' walk the other way to the South Bank. We didn't have any security concerns about access to the hotel rooms.
We stay in London frequently and I write very few reviews of hotels in the capital as they all seem to be pretty standard in this price bracket. The Sanctuary House, however, breaks that mould for its cleanliness, obliging attitude of staff, quality of food and location. Superb value and we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel have a triple aspect.

You just can't beat the location for this hotel if you are culture vulture/ common tourist interested in the "must see" sights of London. First of all, it is easy walking distance from the St. James tube station. I emphasize easy because I was carrying a 40lb backpack, a camera bag, and a purse. Easy walk. Once at the hotel you are literally a stone's throw from Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the London Eye, and St. James park. For the other sights you still have options.
If you like to walk as we do, research the official walkways of London at www.walklondon.org.uk. Here you can download very good maps and audio guides. The original walkway, the Jubilee Walkway, was created in honor of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. There are now seven. Linked together and they connect all the major tourist sights in London through loops and luckily, the Sanctuary House Hotel is right near the most central loop.
If you would rather travel by water the hotel is right near the Westminster pier where river boats continually cruise up and down the River Thames, stopping at all the major sights. For a one time fee you can hop on and off all day. You can find schedules at www.citycruises.com. And BTW, if you want to get your sightseeing on early in the morning, the boats only start at 10am as of 3/21/12. London River Services (public transportation) also has boats ferrying people along the river and you can use your Oyster card for these boats. And please, do yourself a favor and refer to is as "the River Thames", not the "Thames River" and pronounce it like "Tems", rhyming with gems, not the "Thames", rhyming with "James". We saw a young American tourist in a London Pub survive a barrage of blank stares and dirty looks after a mispronunciation as well as a mismodifier. It was as if someone ripped the needle across the record.
If it is raining, take the tube. Hop into St. James Station, right near the hotel, buy an Oyster card at the light blue machine (make sure you have coin) and then throw some credit on it at the other machine (have your credit card). It is efficient, clean, and fast.
Our room was very clean and very modern. It was the nicest bathroom I've ever had in London. Service was excellent. Emails were responded to promptly and efficiently. They recommended a cab company to pick us up at the airport that was 10 GBP less than what I was quoted on the internet. The breakfast was very good, and the pub downstairs was super convenient. I have stayed in at least ten hotels in London. I paid fair quid for the last two and was very disappointed. I paid little quid for the others and was still disappointed. Fact is, you don't get much hotel for your money in London. This time however, I was not disappointed. Yes, it is fair quid but totally worth it in London. Trust me. But remember, this hotel caters to sightseers - not people who want to live in a neighborhood with a happening night life and pubs up and down the street.

I stayed there only one short night and appreciated the central location.
They care about guests, the amenities were ok, tea in the rooms as well. Continental breakfast was ok and nicely presented in the morning, with courteous staff. However, they should invest in the very old, wooden windows which don't really close well and let all the noise in, like the garbage trucks at night.
