“Get a good rate, you can't go wrong”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

I've stayed in this hotel twice before and agree with other reviewers who have done the same that this hotel appears to display grandeur but some parts are in need of some TLC and a pick-me-up. We had an upgrade to a junior suite following our previous not quite so good visit. The initial room we were allocated was situated next to large, noisy air conditioning units but after this was mentioned we were moved to another quieter room. The junior suite was large with double bed, small table and two chairs. The bathroom had a large jacuzzi bath (sadly we didn't know how it worked) but poor shower. Overall you could see that at sometime this room was considered grand but now in much need of an upgrade. You can see where they are trying to save money especially in the restaurant at breakfast. Waiting- on staff there mainly to clear tables rather than personal service of bringing toast and tea/coffee as these are already prepared in advance. So depending on when you go down for breakfast the tea and coffee will either be very fresh or not. The continental breakfast selection was very good. I'm particularly fussy where bacon and sausage is concerned but again these were very tasty. The other thing we noticed since our last visit was that sugar and sauces were dispensed as they would be in a roadside cafe or American diner, again I would think for reducing costs to enable the hotel to provide reasonable B + B rates.

Overall we love this hotel, if you get the right room. The staff are very professional and helpful though if you have any problems. Location of the hotel is very close to the tube (Jubilee line) and DLR (hence the noise, so pack some earplugs if you are a light sleeper). It's very convenient for the City and the new Westfield Shopping Centre at Stratford. Cheaper car parking available off-site for weekend stays.

Room Tip: Rooms not facing the river are quieter.

Given my previous feedback I was offered a package to compensate. At the time, I had no idea whether I would use it or not but a suitable situation arose and I stayed there last week-end.

I was given a top floor room with a balcony and view which were very pleasant. The weather made it lovely to step outside for (very) fresh air and good views of Canary Wharf and area. The height also meant there was little road or rail noise. The welcome at Reception was excellent and at my push back the charge for credit card transaction was waived.

This was definitely the best bit. All the rest was the same: food in Jenny's "poor to average" at best, no ability to turn room heat up, Jenny's was cold towards the end of dinner; bathroom extractor fan didn't work so paper peeling; bath (& taps) in need of renovation. No minibar.

I think I have too high expectations of this hotel. I find it's faded facade and pretentions of grandeur pointless and shallow. Pity, really. It's in an excellent location and could be very nice. Assumably just targetting business people with expense accounts and no time with a requirement to be on their respective door steps ? The week-enders are helping cover costs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor

I wouldn`t have bothered. The hotel decor is drab, assorted faded prints and tapestries in gilt frames all around and dark brown stained woodwork and furniture everywhere. The room was large, making the rather small twin beds look even smaller and despite having low ceilings the designer hung a chandelier by the window to bang you head on.Breakfast looked very inviting even if the room didn`t. The orange and apple juices were so diluted they tasted of nothing. My sausage egg and bacon, were all tepid at best. I waited for fresh toast to be brought out, only to find that too was cold. On the plus side, the location is good and easy and rapid travel to the City and West End by DLR and Jubilee are close by.

Room Tip: I don`t think there can be a good room.

The E14 address in Canary Wharf does not sound exciting dwarfed by the tower blocks of the banking world. Yet it provides a quiet, comfortable, moderately priced and, thanks to the proximity of the DLR, convenient base for visits anywhere in London. It should be well used during the Olympics. It is difficult not to give it full marks.
Only area for improvement would be the signage around the hotel. It is possible to get lost. Surprisingly the mandatory evacuation notices in the rooms are in English only considering it is titled an 'International' hotel with hopefully many overseas visitors. Translations into French, German, Spanish, Italian and possibly Russian, Japanese and Chinese would be expected.

Room Tip: If available lower floor rooms easier to access by stairs. At busy times, esp. breakfast, lifts can b...

The location of this hotel is the only thing going for it. Booked a double room, they put us in a twin. Even after showing our booking confirmation. Air conditioning was stuck on the highest setting at 28 degrees. Terrible staff, food was horrid. The hotel is described falsely as modern.
