“Wonderful Hotel”
Reviewed 11 September 2010

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at The Tower, wonderful location for sightseeing, restaurants, city and riverside walks and good pubs in the area. Comfortable, excellent and varied breakfast, excellent service from all hotel staff throughout our stay. Worth paying a reasonable upgrade for a wonderful view. Watch the bar prices though!

I am getting a little help from my Mum in writing this review. Mum and Dad go almost every summer and my husband and I joined them for a night this year

The location is super
Views excellent and interesting
Location easy for ferry
Staff really helpful
Breakfast really good continental
Makes for a very enjoyable holiday
My parents are in their 80s so can use their bus pass for free transport in London - very helpful - Bus Number 15 comes back to the hotel from the centre
Parents book with Omega - 4 nights BB with transport from lancashire = £260

Stayed her Fri to Sun, love this area around Tower Bridge & London Bridge. Hotel is a bit ugly from outside but lovely inside. The class of rooms depends on the floor, going up in lifts there is different decor in the corridors which gets nicer as you ascend. They were trying to push upgrades at check in (you can easily negotiate so don't accept their 1st offer). Said we would be on 1st floor but could pay for upgrade to higher floor with refurbished room, my parents stayed on 1st floor recently & had a lovely room with Tower Bridge views, so I said I would see the room 1st. Turns out 1st floor rooms weren't ready so would give us 4th floor. Room 408 was lovely & spacious with a huge queen size bed & nice modern decor. View looking right onto St Kath Dock so were perfectly happy without upgrade. Tower Bridge view would be fantastic but St Kaths Dock is great for people watching & looking out onto the expensive yachts, felt you were in the Med instead of central London! The continental breakfast was ok & from what I saw of the small buffet cooked selection I would not think worth paying extra £17. We ate in the Brassarie resturant which has outside seating & was lovely overlooking Tower Bridge in the sun. My husband was not impressed with the service though, he had to go inside to pay the bill as no-one came for it, he then waited inside for me while I went to the loo. The manager sent 4 different waiters to ask if they could help him, not in a helpful way but in an accusing 'what are you doing in here?' way. He was anoyed that no-one remembered us having sat outside for 3 hours eating & drinking & spending plenty of money! The personal touch is definitely missing. Loved the location of the hotel, loads of bars & restaurants around but they quieten down by late evening so no disturbance. The Dog House pub right on the corner does happy hour cocktails for £2.95 between 5.30 - 7.30 & they were fantastic! Across the bridge, loads more places to eat & drink & just a 10 min walk to Borough Market which is a MUST DO. The subway is a 5 min walk past the Tower of London but we walked into the west end in about 40 mins at a leisurely pace.

I stayed at the Tower hotel on 1st Sept 2010. Check in was good and despite other comments on this site reference over booking i received the room i had reserved a executive double. The staff were friendly and helpful and catered for all my needs. The room itself was ok , nothing spectacular but it was clean and fairly spacious and for the price in a central London hotel it was good value for money. I ate in the brasserie bar for both dinner and breakfast , the food was good and the service was impeccable. I was seated straight away on both occasions and the menu was varied and well priced. I had a 3 course meal with wine for around £70. The breakfast was included in the room price and was a buffet style self service affair ,there was plenty on offer from a full english to fresh fruit and cereals including fresh fruit juice and tea and coffee. This hotel was exactly what i expected for the price and although it wasn't amazing it's location made up for the lack of finishing touches. I would defiantly recommend this hotel to anyone who is staying in London.

The hotel is located right next to Tower Bridge on the edge of the River Thames. It's about 10mins walk to Tower Hill tube station (Circle & District lines). You have to walk past 8 sets of traffic lights in order to reach the tube station but you can avoid the traffic lights if you take the lower passage (under the Tower Bridge) by the Tower of London. The surrounding area is a business district and is quite dark and quiet at night, but it's a relatively safe district in London. As the hotel is by the riverside, it's quite windy and the walk from Tower Hill station to the hotel can be quite chilly. I stayed at the hotel in late Aug and it was rainy, windy and cold! Definitely not a good choice in the middle of winter!

This hotel is quite large and there are a mixture of business travellers and tourists staying at the hotel. It can be quite busy at the front desk at certain times of the day.

The rooms are cosy and we had a comfortable king size bed. There was only 1 luggage rack in the room so if you have two persons in the same room, one person needs to put their suitcase on the floor. The room is clean and the bathroom is modern. But there is inadequate lighting in the room and it's very dark at night even if you switch on the various lamps dotted across the room. The older style hotels usually are quite dark, not sure why this hotel also has this problem. Also they do not have a master light switch by the bedside so you have to go around the room turning off all the lamps individually before you sleep which is a bit annoying. They also put 5 cushions and a bed cover on top of the bed which looks nice, but it's a pain when you have to remove them every night in order to crawl under the covers. Good point about this hotel, as it's a business hotel, they have lots of power outlets spread across the room. The bathroom was well lit but the water pressure was not very strong. The room was clean and they had modern fittings in the bathroom, so didn't have to worry about awful old fashion plumbing and unclean bathrooms you find in many European hotels.

There is a decent selection of breakfast items and the food quality is not bad. Good idea to have breakfast in the hotel (if included) as eating out in London can be quite expensive.

When you check-in, they ask you if you would like newspaper delivered to your door each morning, be reminded this is not a free service, they will charge you for the newspapers when you check out (but at a slightly discounted price than if you bought the newspaper at the newsagents or bookshop).

The hotel itself is not a bad choice, but due to it's location, I would not recommend it to others. Tower Hill is located at the edge of Zone 1 and there should be better or similar quality hotels in a more central location in London. Circle and District tube lines are slow and unreliable. Best to stay in a hotel located more centrally if you are visiting London as a tourist (unless you are here on Business and your office is located near this hotel). I would suggest looking for a hotel near a tube station which is served by more than 1 tube line so it's more convenient.

Taxi pick-up from Heathrow costs approx £41 and from the hotel to Heathrow costs approx £33. Two reliable taxi services (020) 7722-2111 or (020) 8838-3299.
