This is the 6th time we have stayed at The Montague on the Gardens, having just returned from a weekend there staying on 26 May for a theatre break with 2 other couples. We have previously stayed as a couple, with our young children and with friends. Each visit has been exceptional, from the moment you pull up outside the hotel which is on a quiet road in Bloomsbury opposite the British Museum. The hotel itself has a luxurious typically English Victorian feel to it, no modern minimalist look here, it is exceptionally clean in all areas, from the front entrance to the public toilets on the ground floor. On pulling up outside we are greeted by the extremely friendly concierge team who soon whisk our bags inside and our car away, the reception staff have always been professional, friendly and helpful. We have only ever stayed in the Master Suites at the hotel and can particularly recommend room 216 with its light and luxurious furnishings, the beds seem to stretch out forever and are amazingly comfortable, the bathrooms are fantastic with television, rain shower, dressing gowns, marble finishings and the rather cool 'lit' toilet! Canapes are delivered early evening, along with ice bucket to accompany drinks from the mini-bar, fruit bowl and a small box of home-made biscuits. After an evening out it is a delight to return to your room, where the curtains are drawn, lamps on, bed turned down with a pillow treat that varies each visit. We have eaten in the hotels restaurant and can highly recommend it for a beautiful evening meal, we have also experienced their afternoon tea which is gorgeous, various sandwiches, the best scones ever, and several cakes to finish, the tea experience is a delight with timers for each different type. We have also had afternoon tea with our two young children who were made to feel just as welcome with their own version of afternoon tea. Our last visit, one of our friends jokingly mentioned that a packet of crisps would go down a treat with the sandwiches and voila! within minutes the staff were back with a huge bowl of crisps, it is these tiny things that make staying here such an absolute pleasure.
Breakfast is a delight, with everything you can think off, the best scrambled eggs ever, and smiling, chatty friendly staff keen to make sure you have everything you wish.
The hotel itself is welcoming, comfortable and fulfills the requirements for a relaxing weekend being treated like you actually matter. The one thing that truly stands out from the crowd at the Montague on the Gardens is its staff, I cannot praise them highly enough, each and everyone of the staff members are friendly, helpful and truly seem to enjoy working to please the guests staying there. On returning from a day out they will always ask how your show was (always remembering what you were going to see), how was your meal, and after six visits they even remember our childrens names and ask how they are if they are not staying with us! On this visit a problem with a restaurant booking whilst we were out on a walking tour was soon solved with a quick phone call to the concierge Jorge, who within minutes called us back to tell us he had booked us another restaurant just round the corner from the hotel, quite amazing with little notice for a Saturday evening!
And there lies the key to the Montague on the Gardens, we return time after time for the pleasure of meeting its wonderful staff who actually care, no false smiles here, in particular Jorge the concierge with his marvellous sense of humour and ability to sort anything out, and Lucia who serves afternoon tea (and crisps) and always takes time to chat to us.
So, in summary, if you are looking for exceptional service above and beyond without the stuffiness of being a 4 star hotel, then you have to experience the Montague on the Gardens for yourselves. It is hard to express in this review just how amazing the staff are, they are a credit to the hotel, they are the main reason we return time after time and daren't stay anywhere else in London. If you do decide to stay there based on this review, please buy Jorge a Strawberry Frappucinno from Starbucks round the corner, we forgot this weekend and he deserves it!
My only wish for our visits to the Montague is to stay in the Guvnors Suite, having been shown round it, it even out-does the other rooms! One day....
