“Good hotel”
Reviewed 27 July 2012

There was some confusion when we arrived at the hotel and the receptionist could not find our reservation which had been made and fully paid in advance through Otel.com. They kindly offered a drink in the impressive lobby while investigating.

After quite some time, we finally were informed that we would have a room (no idea if it was the one originally booked) but reception maintained that iour supposed reservation had not been paid in advance.

Honestly, I think it is extremely embarrassing to stand at a 5 star hotel reception desk getting the feeling that people look at you out of the corner of their eyes while you face these long moments of solitude when the receptionist insists you have not paid your room ! This should not happen in a hotel of such a category. Or if it should happen, it should be done in a more discreet manner at least !

Because of this "treatment" I decided that I would stay firmly on my position: I had the printed out proof that the room was booked and paid and I would not accept to be charged a second time and get reimbursed when they would have sorted everything out, just to make the receptionist's life easier. We have been travelling a lot and booked hotels either directly or through websites like Otel.com and never had such an experience before.

In the end, after involving a few front desk people, we were taken to a room with the reassurance that we would not be charged a second time.

We were given an average size room, it was indeed extremely comfortable and had all amenities one would expect from this category of hotel, excellent bed, very convenient bathroom, yet I think the decoration was rather unimpressive and impersonal, it felt more like one of these chain hotels.

The amazingly delicious breakfast is served at their restaurant by a team of very pleasant waiters, this was the highlight of our long week-end stay; but, despite having mentioned it, we never got the newspapers we asked to be delivered to the room every morning.

Maybe it was just a question of not being at the right place at the right moment, and we agree that sometimes misfortune happens, but we'd rather not test our luck another time.

I am extremely sorry to hear of the confusion surrounding your reservation on arrival and I apologise sincerely to you for your disappointment. I would like to look into this matter further and therefore I hope you do not mind if I contact you directly to find out additional details, including the precise date of stay and reservation name for the booking. In the meantime, I would like to thank you for all positive comments made and I am delighted that you so enjoyed our breakfast.

This has got to be my favourite hotel in London based on the great service you get. This was the third time that I've stayed here - the other two times being some years ago. From the minute you walk in to the minute you leave you are always looked after. Lots of little touches in the room too! Bar service was great and had a fantastic sharing platter in the bar as we were running late for the theatre. Will stay again - hopefully very soon!

So far, this is my favorite hotel in London. Excellent service, very nice rooms and good amenities for a boutique hotel. The area has a lot to do and good restaurant options.

We've stayed here in the past and tried some of the newer or newly renovated hotels in London as we always want to keep an open mind about what is going on. To be honest, I am not too sure if I want to continue trying other properties as the team at One Aldwych always makes sure that we are having a great time. Wecame back for a couple of nights and loved it again and again.... It is the little things which make a huge difference to one's experience. We are never short changed in this hotel. Its the welcome card from the manager, the free internet throughout the hotel, perfectly ripened daily fresh fruit, bottled water on turn down, newspaper and of course one of the best equipped health club facilities we have ever encountered in any hotel in the world. The staff is amazing, the management always present and the food really good. I am sure that we will not go astray any more.

I first stayed at One Aldwych ten years ago when Campbell Grey, the owner/director of the hotel, was fully in charge. He had managed to create something very special: a truly handsome contemporary hotel within the architecture of a wonderful turn-of-century bank building. The quality of the materials he used -satins, silks, marble, granite - made each contemporary room a jewel box. The large pool and private screening room in the lower levels of the hotel were just an added bonus. Fast forward 10 years and I returned in July of 2012 to find new owners of the hotel who are only making the best even better. The food in the dining room, Indigo, is not only superb. It is complemented by some of the warmest and most professional service I have encountered in London. I fetl not only well-fed, but well taken care of. The concierge, Donato, who was there 10 years ago, is still there and is supported by a superb team which manage to always get the difficult theater ticket or dinner reservation. The best news, however, is that the hotel is just about to unveil a new, handsome lounge strictly for use by hotel guests. A 'private club' within what already feels like a well-kept London secret. The location of this great hotel in the midst of the theater district and a few blocks from Covent Garden made it the perfect location. Yes, there are new beautiful hotels in London (Bulgari, etc) but One Aldwych is so perfect in every category that I would hard pressed to think of a reason for staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: Avoid entry level 'superior' rooms. They really are too small.

Dear Seattle Traveller

Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to post a review following your recent stay. We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to welcome you back after so many years and to know that you found the hotel even better than when you first visited. How kind of you to mention Donato too and the Concierge team, whom along with the rest of our colleagues are proud to read your comments.

One Aldwych recently celebrated its 14th birthday and in fact the hotel’s private owners have not changed since its opening day. I note that Mr Campbell Gray was managing director rather than owner of the property and he stepped down in mid 2009. We are pleased to continue with the original philosophies of One Aldwych and as you say are always trying to ‘make the best even better’.

Thank you once more and we do hope to see you again very soon.
.
Kind regards
