Owner description: ZSL London Zoo is packed full of wonder and amazement, with over 650 species of animals to meet and thousands more surprising and fascinating facts just waiting to be discovered. Find yourself face-to-face with our Asiatic lions and our friendly giraffes whilst they enjoy a spot of lunch. Wander through our Madagascan shrub forest and see how many of our ring-tailed lemurs you can spot before heading down to B.U.G.S to quiz our insect experts on the importance of insects to our ecosystem. Then, if you're feeling brave, you can get up close and personal and take a Spider Selfie with our resident arachnids in Europe’s only walk-through spider experience. Not to mention firm favourites Gorilla Kingdom, Penguin Beach and Tiger Territory. This is a place where fun days help us fund raise. Where your visit will help support our conservation work in over 50 countries around the world. Where really great days out can make a really positive difference to the wildlife we work to protect.

as a Zoo fan, I have been to quite a few. Particularly enjoyed the huge Penguin beach. By far the biggest enclosure for penguins I have come across. Plenty space for the animals and a chilled feeling for humans.

I had to time to spare in London and went to the zoo with my 2 year old daughter. On the day I got in for vouchers costing just £5 plus 50p in cash and my daughter was free. A good tip to save money: if you have Tesco loyalty vouchers you can exchange every £5 worth for £20 worth of Days Out vouchers, and these can be spent on entry to the zoo. But normal admission prices are too high, as other reviewers have said.

In the past, I have been a member of ZSL, which gave my family unlimited entry to London Zoo and Whipsnade but membership prices have risen at an alarming rate. I am now a member of my local zoo (Twycross) at the cost of £100 for 2 adults and 2 children for a whole year. That gives enrty to many other partner zoos (eg Chester, Edinburgh) and is far better value than the ZSL scheme. I have read the ZSL reply to another review on here, and whilst the zoo might convince itself that prices are competitive, it's not convincing me. It's nice that the fee funds charity projects, but there is a recession, and £80 for a family day out (maybe 3 hours) is way too expensive.

That's the moaning over, let's look at the zoo itself. When I first went to the zoo about 5 years ago, it was a bit run down but new projects were being implemented all the time to improve the old structure with enclosures now considered unsuitable for animals. These include the Gorilla Kingdom, which is well executed. The latest improvement I noticed is the penguins, which now have a fabulous water area with plenty of room and good viewer access, and there is a new tiger enclosure being constructed.

London Zoo seems to be moving in the direction of interactivity between visitors and animals, so you can walk in areas where butterflies, birds and even monkeys roam free. This is all well done, although the woman volunteer in the monkey experience area didn’t really seem to want anyone too near her monkeys. (Don't point at the monkeys! Move that pushchair. No not there!) All in all though, an effort is being made to make the visitor experience good and we enjoyed our afternoon there. A few more animals would be nice though and prices do need to be lower. But I'll give the zoo a glass half full 4 out of 5.

Very nice zoo. Some cages too small though. Anyway, worth a visit. Entrance fee was quite expensive though, about 80 pounds (2 kids & 2 adults).

It is an ok day trip, December is probably not the best time to visit but the zoo does need some love and some of the animals could do with some new enclosures. Saying that the Gorilla enclosure is fab and they do have plans for developments.

Thank you for taking the time to write about us

We are happy that you enjoyed your time overall at London Zoo however, aknowledge that you were dissapointed with the price. With regards to our admission prices, we do closely monitor these and feel that they are comparable to other similar days out, both in London and to other British zoos. As you may already be aware, ZSL is a registered charity which relies on support from the public for income to fund not only our work at ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, but also our scientific research and conservation programmes all over the world. Visiting the zoo, you have made a valuable contribution to our conservation work.

Whipsnade Zoo may also be somewhere that you would consider visiting in the future. With 600 acres of countryside, there are larger animals there and bigger enclosures, making for an exciting day out.

Thank you once again for your feedback,

Kind regards,

The team at ZSL
