“Remarkable - but with some training needs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2012

For remarkably little (in central London terms) we had an apartment on two floors with a wonderful view of the River - two bedrooms, big kitchen, a bath, 3 showers, dining room and much more. Truly memorable, and yet ... the shower cords were dirty, some of the woodwork was heavily scuffed, on arrival our porter got us out of the lift 5 floors too early, and we had to wait for a long time for it to return, we didn't get our alarm call when we booked it, on departure we didn't get the London taxicab we expected but a hire car which charged a steepish fare... and the staff, though pleasant enough, didn't speak English very well. None of these moans was too important individually, but overall they turned an amazing experience into something a little less wonderful.

A very modern hotel with quality fittings, huge windows, comfortable beds and good service and I can't quite put my finger on why I feel a little let down by this hotel. The room was just amazing, an unusual layout with everything you could need. We stayed in a Nile Suite which was huge with amazing views of the Thames..... and of Jewsons corrugated shed roof.. in fact most of the view was of the shed roof. We were right by the the London heliport and this can be noisy although I didn't hear any helicopters during the night. The bed was comfortable the furnishings were excellent and the mod cons were.. well fiddly. The shower has three controls, one of which came off in your hand and it took a long time to get ti to work. The huge TV has internet but we found it quite hard to work and couldn't control it so we gave up.The tv went off completely for a while and then wouldn't switch off or change channel when it did come on. The TV in the bathroom was impossible to view from the bath!!!
We had an early appointment but wanted to go to the spa in the morning...it didn't open until 9am so that was out for us.
Staff were very helpful and the courtesy bus is so useful. Don't let me put you off this hotel, it is a perfectly good 5 star hotel it just didn't get under my skin.
Continental breakfast at £10 is very good value with lovely views, I just wish we could have enjoyed it after visiting the spa.

Room Tip: Thames views are amazing, the alternative views are industrial

The best hotel room I have ever stayed in... a standard double room gets you a spacious bedroom, with lounge area, office area, huge bathroom and walk-in shower, all with high quality wood, tiles, etc. Even an ipod/phone docking station to play to charge or play music though the central speaker system. and it was only 119£... just a 15 minutes bus ride to Victoria Station (bus 170 stops right outside) in central London. The only problem with this hotel is the decor of the lobby and halls (Andy Worhol on even more drugs). But these are just passages to a room larger than most one-bedroom apartments in London. Excellent hotel. Will be back.

My husband and i stayed in May 2012. In the main, our stay was enjoyable. We had a lovely room on the 2nd floor with partial sea view. The room was super and certainly deserves 5 out of 5. Lovely bath, shower, tv in the bathroom etc etc. Lovely bed, very comfortable and nice furnishings throughout. We also enjoyed the restaurant both for dinner and breakfast, the food was excellent and very good value when taking into account the 50 per cent discount. There was also a nice atmosphere throughout, informal and relaxed. Although we didn't make use of either the gym or spa, both looked of a high standard. On the minus side, the location isn't the best but don't let this put you off if you intend to spend your time out and about in London. Other minor irritations included the hotel pick up not picking us up despite us phoning ahead and having this confirmed. We also found the reception staff slightly robotic which was out of keeping with other staff we encountered who seemed genuinely friendly and only too willing to please. These are minor criticisms however. Ultimately, this hotel offers a relaxing and very friendly environment in which to relax.

Hotel Rafayel is a modern and generally well maintained, eco-friendly hotel with cosy, stylish and well-sized rooms (for London) with a not very well working climate control system and average staff, located 20’ (public) bus ride away from Central London (Victoria Station) or 5’ away from Clapham Junction station (railway) by free hotel shuttle.

Hotel Rafayel offers a modern ambience and very nice rooms to its guests. The staffs were not very friendly; just on an average level (e.g. 3-times I was the one who greeted first when I met the service team on the corridor / reception).

The rooms are well maintained, except our hand shower which was leaky. The shower itself offers 3 options: rainfall shower, hand shower or a jet shower which is very nice. The bathroom offers plenty of space and was very clean. Shower gel and conditioner is available in dispensers which is more eco-friendly (as they call themselves an eco-friendly hotel) and fully okay.

The double-bed was a little bit smaller than I am used to in Central Europe, but it was still big enough and very comfortable for a very good sleep.

Unfortunately, the noise protection isn’t as good as it should be in a 5* hotel, because in the morning you always clearly heard the maid vacuum-cleaning in the neighbouring room as well as other guests speaking in the corridor, which sometimes is a little bit disturbing if you try to catch some sleep. The climate control was a little bit complicated as well – as the ventilation was far too noisy to sleep during the night, we tried to switch it off. Unfortunately it just remained off for a few minutes. Then it switched back to “automatic control” again and was noisy. So we called the receptionist, who was able to remotely switch it off completely, which solved our problem within a few seconds after calling. The same thing happend with the electrical "Do-not-disturb"-button, which automatically turned off again, after a few minutes (not very helpful). Such basic things should work properly in a 5* hotel.

The Philips LCD TV was working properly with app. 25 (mainly English) TV channels. The lightning in the room is LED-only, which makes it even more stylish and eco-friendly and which was fully okay for us. We had a part-view on the river Thames and the heliport in front of the hotel. It’s funny to see 1-2 helicopters landing per hour on the heliport (which is not as noisy as you would expect).

One evening we had dinner at the “Banyas restaurant”, which is similar styled as the hotel itself and offers a very good (Asian) cuisine (with 50% discount on the bill for hotel guests – when you order 2 courses or more). There is a spa available as well which we didn’t use during our stay.

The location is not excellent, but you have a regular bus connection (Route 170) which takes you to Victoria station in app. 15-20 minutes (and goes every 6-8 minutes) and you have a free hotel shuttle to Clapham junction (railway station; available every 30 minutes).

Overall, it was a nice (3 nights) stay at hotel Rafayel and I would recommend it, if you are not too sensitive to noise. I would rate it to 4*, instead of 5*.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to post your review regarding your stay with us. We always consider the feedback from our customers as a vital part of our business. While we appreciate your positive comments, we wish to address the few negative points in your review.

Since your comments regarding the attitude of the staff, we have taken remedial measures to ensure it will not be repeated. Please accept our sincere apologies. Rarely do we get complaints regarding our staff. We are an equal opportunity employer and we take pride in our multi cultural staff and of our training programmes which have given them a sense of security and responsibility towards their work and towards our all important valued guests of the hotel.

You have commented regarding the noise in the room, both from outside and within. We would like to point out that all our rooms have the highest levels of insulation between walls and corridors. Each wall consists of two insulated fire protected boards. The doors are designed as fire doors with grey insulation all round with further insulation between the frame and the door to prevent any smoke entering the room in case of a fire, thus, also serving as a deterrent against noise entering or escaping the rooms. All our rooms are equipped with state of the art Daikin air conditioning which is noiseless. However, we are sincerely sorry if the ventilation and our staff disturbed your sleep. We have taken further steps to start our housekeeping services as late as possible.

Your feed back is important to us. We are glad you enjoyed your stay overall and look forward to welcome you back in the near future. We are a fledging business and this kind of honest and constructive comments helps us to improve and enhance our product and services.

Thank You & Best Regards
Chris de Saram
