The Picton readng rooms in the central library are well worth a visit. Built in 1875 they stand today as they did then. Marvellous, grand architecture. Also not found in many other libraries today, silence.
Round your visit off with a lift ride onto the library roof for a view and over Liverpool. On a clear day you can see the Welsh hills.
Total cost - £0.00

I visited the library with a friend when sight seeing the city. The old section of the library is a must see. The architecture in the building is breathtaking. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Various sections to browse, read and enjoy the books. Separate area for children and a quiet place for adults.

What a contrast - the very old exterior and modern interior and then a real step back in time again into the Picton Room. A lovely wander around the library and views across the city from the roof terrace. Well worth the visit.

Do pop in here even if you don't need a quiet place to work or read a book! It's peaceful and beautiful! The newly restored area has a striking staircase and a rooftop with a beautiful view and the reading room and the Hornby library are definitely worth a visit...not to mention how nice it is to work in such a beautiful place.

I visited here because of my keen interest in the author Helen Forrester, and I wanted to visit the part of the library that she herself sat in - it was absolutely stunning, the ornate metalwork, wood panelling, old fashioned wrought iron spiral staircase up to the 'landing' that you can walk around - all of it is absolutely stunning. There's also some touch screens with information on various parts of the original library, along with pictures from back in the day, all very interesting. I asked at the information desk if there was anything relating to Helen Forrester in the library: a display, an exhibition or suchlike? and I was very disappointed and quite surprised that there was absolutely nothing, and the man at the desk added that as far as he could recall they've never covered this author in any displays/exhibitions etc - I find that rather sad, and quite unbelievable, as not only was she a very successful author, but she actually USED that library herself - that said, whether you have any interest in the biographical books or not, it IS a beautiful place to visit, the original parts of the building are just stunning to look at

The older part is lovely and they have a great collection. The front decor fools you as it looks like it is all in the older architecture but once inside it is a modern built library.

This is no ordinary library, look inside for the Picton reading room and the other old rooms. Go upto the top and get the views of the city too. Its free, yes free!!

A beautifully designed building with many interesting displays. The designers have melded old and new in a very subtle way.
