“Immaculate cottage in beautiful location, great for a car-free trip”

We travelled by train to Windermere so were looking for somewhere easy to get to on foot. This cottage is about 10-15 minutes from the station so absolutely fine with rucksacks. On a lovely, quite road (amazing houses!) so safe to walk along. Lots of buses from Windermere that allow you to travel round the Lake District/get to the bottom of a mountain etc. (plus plenty of shops/restaurants in Windermere itself) so really perfect for a car-free trip.

The cottage was spotlessly clean and had all we needed for a few days - even doing some fairly serious cooking. Everything was provided, including a torch (needed for walking down the lane at night) and lots of brochures with ideas of what to do in the area. A huge bonus was that it's only a 5 minute walk down the road to the lake, where a public footpath leads right down to the shore, and along/up to various viewpoints, fells, etc.

Really friendly emails when booking, but despite the owner living next door we were left to our own devices the whole time, and had a large garden/terrace to ourselves - perfect for a quiet getaway. Watch out for nuthatches from the kitchen/bedroom window!

Highly recommended for a couple wanting a convenient, car-free break in the Lakes.

“Lovely stay at Birthwaite cottage”
Reviewed 11 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We stayed in birthwaite cottage for 4 nights in Sept 2014. We chose this cottage based on the tripadvisor reviews and were not disappointed. The cottage was well located just 5 min walk from Windermere village, and down a quiet road so there was no traffic or people noise. The cottage is the perfect size for a couple, and very cosy. The kitchen is stocked with basic utensils and crockery - so has what you need for a short stay.
Would recommend for a romantic short break, a base for exploring the area, and for those wanting a location close to amenities (pubs/restaurants/supermarkets) yet also quiet and peaceful.

“Excellent and Beautiful, wanted to stay longer.”

Upon arrival the Property looked idyllic, surrounded by trees and gardens. An ideal place to chill and relax with the one you love. Lovely veranda where we had our breakfast on 2 occasions and evening drinks. Once inside couldn't of asked for anything better. Everything was there you needed. Nice, clean and cosy. Would of loved to stay longer as lots of places to visits and walks. Windermere town only a short walk which has 2 good supermarkets Morrison's and the coop although would recommend Bowness also. I would definitely like to stay here again if I get the opportunity :-)
Only advice would be when coming down the drive keep to the left as this will avoid the car bumper coming into contact with the road.

“Peace and harmony”

We picked a bad few days weather wise, for a recuperative break as it rained non-stop, however one of the highlights of our visit was staying at Birthwaite Cottage. It was a pleasant 20 minute walk from the railway station, and we found the dreaded driveway, as mentioned in other reviews, was no problem at all. Thanks to other reviews we had remembered to bring a torch but found that one had already been kindly provided, along with an umbrella, by the owners. The first thing that captured our attention on entering the cottage was the beautiful wooden staircase and floor, immaculately polished and clean, as was the whole cottage throughout. The kitchen was perfect and the bathroom was spacious and attractive with a large shower cubicle and power shower. After a day's walking, the quietness, the woodland, the harmony and cleanliness of the cottage created the relaxing, restful break that we needed.

“Great place to stay!”

Birthwaite Cottage was exactly as it looked in all the photos. Getting to it was easy and key collection was just as per instructions. The booking process etc all went extremely smoothly and easily (even via internet from Australia!). The cottage is attached to a larger cottage which obviously has occupants, but we really only saw someone once and didn't feel we or they were intruding on each other. The cottage is situated on a very quiet street so it is wonderfully quiet and peaceful. It is very well equipped and very well presented. It is quite a way from Windermere - we walked it a couple of times but it does take a while even at the fast pace we have, so we also drove in and parked a few times, especially at night. The weather was very dull, rainy and cold for our stay, but the heating works a treat and we were totally warm and comfy in our little haven. There is sooo much to do in this area that it boggles the mind and we managed about 5% of it! There are some stunning walks to be done and info is readily available from the tourist centre in Windermere. The only downer with the cottage is that there was no wifi - a necessity for us on our trip being so far from home and wanting to keep in touch.
