Long walk, through a beautiful valley. Like a set from an epic medievalesque film.
The house looks like Heathcliffe might live there. But Suzy and Martin are gentle welcoming people. The house has been rebuilt with sheeps wool insulation, then the old roof put back on top. Our bedroom was warm, dry, and homely. Bathrooms are shared but they are clean. There was no wifi, a plus for us. There were real fires in wood burners. All necessary facilities to cook were there. pans, crockery, cutlery and about...16 hobs! It was full but we didn't have to que to cook. It looks like Mrs. Tiggewinkles place inside. The food sold was good quality stuff in tins and packets. There's an honesty box for tea and coffee, which is provided. Love it forever.

Thanks Cherry B. It's also been compared to the Weasleys' house from Harry Potter!

This was my first experience of staying in a hostel (I've managed to avoid them for 48 years!) and I have to say it was a good one. Suzy was very welcoming and there was only one other lady in my room. The facilities are great but it's the location that makes it amazing - not a house or road for 3 miles. Everywhere you look, you just see the beautiful Lakeland landscape - and sheep! We stayed here as part of the Cumbria Way Mountain Route and would highly recommend it.

First things first. The location is as fantastic as the views are breathtaking. You are only 3.5 miles from a road but the sense of space and freedom is amazing. We Stayed there as part of our walk on the Cumbria Way. Not being a 'hostel regular' I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was so good! OK the accommodation is basic but once the fire got going it was warm, spacious and very welcoming. Martin and Suzy are a really friendly young couple who run the place well and are clearly passionate about this most special place. Buying food (and wine) from their in house shop lightened our rucksacks and the DIY catering was fun. Showers and beds were good too. Best of all though was waking early in such a wonderful, remote place - and for a few precious moments, truly feeling part of it. I cannot recommend Skiddaw House highly enough as either a way point on a north lakes walk or a destination in it's own right for a group of friends or family. A truly memorable experience.

In years to come places like Skiddaw House will be replicated in museums. I felt like I'd been transported back to my youth c 1980 and almost expected to be allocated a chore in the morning. Thanks to all involved for keeping it going and as it is. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Don't bring:

- Indoor footwear. Crocs are provided.
- Towels. You can hire one for just £1.50.
- Breakfast and packed lunch. Again easier to buy @ £3.50 each at the hostel.
- Perishable food. There isn't a fridge.

Do bring:

- Headtorch for reading. The power is solar so lights are the strength only of a security light and dim to read by.
- Something to wear in bed, perhaps. There's no heating in the bedrooms but duvets, blankets and hot water bottles are provided.
- Supper? You can buy a simple meal at the hostel to cook yourself [and I'm sure they're fab] but you can't beat an M&S curry after a day in the fells in my view!

One other thing:

If walking up from Keswick/Latrigg bear in mind that a coffee van ['Bean on the Fells'] often parks up at the Gale Road car park in the afternoon. A great way to start a micro-adventure into the wilds!

For a four-minute film about our stay search YouTube for 'paul kirkwood skiddaw'.

Thanks for such a thorough review Paul, I'm sure this will be useful for other guests. We're glad that you enjoyed the traditional hostelling experience here; perhaps we'll think up a chore for you next time!

Our third visit was as good as the last two. An excellent little hostel, and still stocking vegan foods in it's store.

We benefited from Martin's expertise about walking conditions in the fells to the North-East and avoided getting into the bogs beyond Great Calva when out for the day.

As ever we were sorry to see the hostel disappear over the horizon as we walked away down Glenderaterra.
