Our first reaction on seeing the location was 'wow'. Our second reaction on entering the property was 'wow!' This is a charming lodge and we have had a most wonderful stay. It is full of character and has certainly had a big impact in terms of rest and recuperation....we have been so chilled here, and even our loopy lurcher has chilled out...he is a different dog!
We have spent a good deal of our time 'at home' in the lodge and it has been perfect. Highlights: very comfy king sized bed, lovely hot shower, wonderful log fire, iPod dock for music, window seat to watch the critters from, brilliant storage heaters which kept the place toasty warm, small but well appointed kitchen...I could go on.
We have seen robins, blue tits and other birds in the garden, and deer in the woods just beyond the garden wall.
We met the owner, Ruth, and she was lovely and welcoming.
Wifi was ok when we stayed....but wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't as there are loads of books, games and jigsaws on offer at the lodge. I started to read one of these while here...Hunter Davies A Walk Around the Lakes...and have bought it online to complete at home...such a great guide to the area.
Trips to Ambleside and Grasmere were lovely...5 minutes in the car to each. Rydal water is a wonderful place for dogs, and ours thoroughly enjoyed it.
If you want something like a Premier Inn, don't come here. But if you want a peaceful, cosy retreat in the heart of rugged natural beauty.....get here while there are still dates available! I have already booked for summer, and have recommended to friends and family...so be quick about it!

“A little bit of heaven”

This delightful little 'studio' bolt-hole is the perfect way to relax and unwind in a beautiful setting. Set in its own woodland plot the quietness is broken only by the chattering of birds. True, the kitchen and bathroom are cold, but the real fire just adds to the cosy feel. We stayed for three nights and had everything we needed. The location of Ladywood is what makes it so great, high on a hillside over Grasmere, yet a short walk (down a bit of a hill) to Grasmere and it's restaurants and walks. Great walks right from the door. This spot to me, is a little bit of heaven. The owners have been very helpful. I have seen the few negative comments made, but in all honesty, the Lodge is as you see it on the pictures. It's extremely reasonably priced and it is the location that make it five star and worth every penny! You cannot help but totally relax.

“Over rated property description”

The description of the property led us to believe that we were going into a quiet hideaway with quality furnishings and with every facility catered for. The location description location, however, was the only true part as far as we were concerned. The place is basically a large bedsit with separate kitchen and bathroom. There is a very comfortable and clean bed but the rest of the furnishings are not only jaded but not very clean. The dining chairs and settee have cushions that sag and are very uncomfortable. Two of the ceiling lights looked unsafe as they appeared not to be fixed fast in the ceiling. The bedside lamps didn't work at all and the shades were thick with dust. The 'DVD player' is simply and integrated dvd in a very small TV. The Wi-Fi is limited and slow.
Another issue is the lack of privasy when the window curtains are open. They look straight out onto the main house drive and afford an open view to anybody passing. On the plus side the property is well sighted, very quite and ideal for some lovely walks but we could not recommend it in its present condition.

Management Response
31 Aug 2015
We take feedback from our guests very seriously. We met with Tom at the end of his stay, and read his entry in our visitors' book.
His entry said: 'Pleasant stay in the Lakes as always. The Lodge was acceptable but with a few niggles.......These were minor and did not impinge on our overall enjoyment'.
We do want our guests to be comfortable, so we have ensured that we have addressed his concerns. This is a period cottage and the furnishings are in keeping with its character.

“Ideal base for Lakes walking”

Very quiet and peaceful location in woodland where you sleep in perfect silence and wake to the songs of many different birds, such as blackbird, song thrush, wood pigeon, chiff-chaff, willow warbler, blackcap, robin, wren . . .
The facilities are simple but adequate, with a comfortable king-size bed, dining table in a large bay window looking onto the garden, a small verandah facing east for sunny breakfasts in the open and a log fire for cold nights. Phone signal was good on Vodaphone, but don't expect too much from the wi-fi as the connection is very flakey.
Grasmere village is only a 20 minute walk and there are many enjoyable, scenic walks direct from the property, so give the car a rest!

The cottage is a perfect little retreate ideal for those who love walking. We did not use a car or the bus the whole time we were there. You really are spoilt for choice with the walks, and Grasmere is only a stones throw away with some lovely pubs.

The location is better than expected you are slap bang in the middle of both Grasmere and Rhydal, so you really couldnt ask for better! The grounds the house is on are beautiful and it is such a joy to see such lovely wild flowers teeming with wildlife. We saw a deer walking past the bottom of the grounds which made our holiday.

The area is full of history and this is the base to look at it all from!! Perfect to unwind in the evenings, sitting watching the bees working in the garden, the dragon flys, squirels, birds and more... there is no reason for the TV to go on.. unless you need to check the weather ;)

We would happily stop here again.
