“Are there two White Lions?”
Reviewed 7 April 2012

We paid our annual visit to Ambleside and ate twice at the White Lion. On both occasions the food was more than adequate and for about £7 each we had a main course and a drink. Excellent value for overpriced Ambleside. Staff were overworked but polite and cheerful. The the place needed a bit of clearing of tables after customers left and freshening up.

However I can't believe many of the reviews on here as they don't chime with our experiences of the Bar - so are there two White Lion Hotels or just a lot folk who want a lot more than the place offers?

Visited White Lion out of necessity as 9 adults wanted to sit outside with 3 dogs and the other eateries were too busy.........that should have sent alarm bells ringing really on a sunny afternoon last week!
The waitress who REMOVED a glass of wine from the table after we had purchased it saying we could not prove our 20 year old party member's age - did not apologise, nor offer the glass of wine to another ( obviously older) party member. She simply picked it up off the table and took it away! When this was questioned it was met with immaturity and rudeness by herself and the manager.
Our lunch meals which consisted of sandwiches came at completely different times so people hadn't even received their food when others had completely finished.
The steak sandwich was abysmal and completely inedible - all gristle only fit to hand to the dogs under the table!
There didn't seem any point in complaining as we had already paid for the food, the drinks and the wine the waitress stole!
I would never go to this place again and would like to point out that I have never reviewed so negatively previously for any establishment.

Been dining at the White Lion for 10 years + but will not be returning. What has happened here !! ? the Staff are cocky rude and awkward ! the food is the worst we've had anywhere. Perhaps it's the Managers fault, been there too long and complacency has set in ! seems like they couldn't give a hoot about customer service, which is pretty obvious now having read previous reviews. It's time the brewery got a grip with this place and sorted it out from the top down. Take our advise give this place a wide berth unless your happy to eat and drink overpriced rubbish with rude service to match !!

We only wanted to eat here. Not allowed to park in the empty car park (in january) told it was needed for building contractors - that did not appear. My partner is disabled, cannot walk far and is severly sighted, so i took the car to park as close as possible. Ordered a steak medium received a horrid bloody blob, the barman took it away for about a minute then it came back not quite as red, but nearly. My partner said we wanted out money back which was thrown on the table, the barman must have had it with him as he did not return to the till, and we were TOLD to leave when we had finished.

We have had nice meals here before but there is is way we will be going back

Nearby Windermere Station is just a 15-minute drive away. From Ambleside, it's easy to explore Windermere's 26-mile long coastline on foot, by car or by bike. After a long day outdoors, you'll love collapsing into one of the lodge's double, twin or family rooms, all with flatscreen TV and free WiFi. Refreshed and relaxed, come down* to our cosy pub and enjoy a well-earned tipple with some hearty, freshly cooked food. *Children are welcome to accompany parents or guardians eating in The White Lion's family dining area.
