We stayed at the Royal Oak, Ledbury, from 18th to 22nd June 2018 and found it quite an experience . The hotel itself is 15th century and very picturesque as you might expect , with 12 rooms varying from MASSIVE with en-suite ( ours ) to tiny , with 3 on the top floor sharing a bathroom and separate toilet with bang-your-head-on-the-lintel doors . Well , people were smaller back then in C15th .Those rooms are also up narrow, windy staircases needing crampons and ropes to get up there .Do not expect too many mod cons .
Ledbury itself is a lovely small town with yet more 500+ year old buildings , independently run shops, gorgeous leafy , hilly surroundings ( Malvern Hills nearby ) and a real community , friendly spirit even extended to outsiders like ourselves.
But the real jewel in the Royal Oak's crown has to be the manager ( cleaner , cook , receptionist , chief bottle washer , etc ) , Katie , who stepped in when the previous manager jumped ship a few weeks previously and , despite being new to the job copes ( Canadian ancestry ? No, more like Trojan with her work ethic ! ) so well , while keeping up a helpful , polite , friendly and cheerful face to all comers , despite our suspicion she must be absolutely knackered most of the time .More
