“Fine dining in a traditional pub in Winchester”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2012

Spent one night at the Wykeham Arms on a friend's recommendation. Beautiful traditional pub, fantastic location, with parking. We stayed in their accommodation across the road,(the Bakehouse) which was quiet at night, i think a room over the pub may not be as quiet. Blown away by the high standard and quality of food served; both dinner and breakfast were Michelin standard and reasonably priced. We can't wait to go back. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.

Spent one night at the Wykeham Arms in March for a weekend getaway. Great location with parking on site - access to the car park is tight. Bags of character throughout and packed at both lunchtime and evenings, with a faithful crowd of locals at the bar including students and local clergy! It's essential to book if you want to use the restaurant. We found the food extremely good, and breakfast was outstanding; buffet of fruit, juices, yoghurt and cereals plus cooked food menu including everything from smoked salmon and scrambled egg through to full english. The dinner menu is a stream-of-consciousness list of ingredients that conjure up an impression of the dish. If you have a food allergy, ask exactly what is in each dish, because it's not always evident. We initially ordered something unsuitable and the waitress replaced it without a murmur. Unconventional and interesting bedrooms (we were in Redman) in the eaves of the house, well away from the noise of the bar and restaurant. There was a little shouting from the street below around midnight, but not enough to spoil our visit. They keep the place very clean. Everything smelled pine-fresh when we came down to breakfast. The staff were attentive and helpful without exception. A really great place to stay with tons of character. Highly recommended if you are looking for a memorable stay in a central location.

Room Tip: Redman is on the cathedral side of the building, top floor, with views across the rooftops of Winche...

We hadn't been to the Wyk for many years (a no children policy and now we have two of them!) but visited hoping that little had changed and were not disappointed. The ethos of the pub has been retained - polite, welcoming and helpful staff serving lovely food; well decorated rooms. We will be back again when we can leave our brood with family.

Spent two nights dinner bed and breakfast at this little treasure of a place at £99 per room per night special on Sundays and Mondays. With amazing food, character rooms with antique furniture, slipper baths this was a great wedding anniversary experience. If you enjoy fine dining, good service, friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you, this is the place.

There are seven rooms in the main building and seven in a building across the road. Our first room (Marshall) was enchanting, however, there was a problem with the plumbing, so we were upgraded (free of charge) to a four poster room (Nelson), which took my breath away. There are 2 dinner menu's, early bird table d'ote from 6pm - 7pm, and a'la carte from 6pm onwards (£20 per person is the allowance towards dinner on half board), we found this sufficient and the food is delicious and served beautifully. There are sausages at 6pm for 75p per dish, we never tried this incase it spoilt our dinner.

The Wykeham Arms has many nooks and crannies, one bar has old school desks with inkwells to sit at, the dinning room is in three parts. The place is full of antique paraphernalia, picures, tankards hanging from the ceiling, etc.
The place has great atmosphere and is very popular, when it was time to leave, I did not want to go. We will be going back there again and again.

Room Tip: Although the Inn is on a narrow back street behind the Cathedral, it can be noisy between 6-9am when...

A very rare break without the children, just for one night, recommended by my sister. After reading some of the previous reviews, was a bit apprehensive, however, could not fault at all. Lovely room, extremely pleasant staff, delicious dinner and breakfast. Great location too. Would highly recommend.
