This group of hotels, the Mercer collection is a great find. The ethos, ambience and great service from everyone, combined with tastefully furnished, comfortable rooms and the proximity to the seafront makes for a perfect stay. The breakfasts are first class too. This is our second visit and we shall definitely be returning! Thank you to all.

The Mercer collection of hotels in Southsea is a fantastic small boutique chain of 6 local properties. Warm, friendly service, clean, well appointed rooms and great value. Great breakfast and a wonderful pub, The Florence Arms. The inside tip is trying to stay in the Florence Gardens hotel, which is an amazing boutique hotel at these prices.

Stayed 4 nights at Florence Gardens. Warmly welcomed by the lovely and efficient Egla. Good points first - good location in quiet, residential area but just about a 5 minute walk from the fantastic promenade. Decent restaurants just about another 5/10 minutes walk in the opposite direction. A bit of a walk to the historic centre (about 25 minutes) but taxis were plentiful and reasonable (about 5 pounds sterling). The breakfast in the hotel was very good, lovely dining room, friendly staff. Room was stocked with l'occitane products, bottled water and tea/coffee and was cleaned every day, great shower, mattress was a little soft for my liking but Himself was happy enough with it . Now, the not so good points - we booked a 'small double room' and boy, was it small. There was only room for one beside table, so my book/water/watch etc had to go on the floor (right beside the door). The desk held the tray for the tea/coffee, an information book about the hotel and a small desk lamp. No room for anything else. No easy chairs - if you wanted to sit down, you sat on the bed. It's just as well the weather was so good during our stay in Portsmouth. If we had been confined to the hotel room, it would have been unbearable. Would I go to the Florence Gardens again? Probably, mainly due to the lovely staff, especially the charming and hardworking Egla. I would, however, be a lot more picky when it came to booking a room.

Room Tip: Don't book a small double room!!

Thank you for your review about your 4 night stay. We are really pleased you liked our location. We are very lucky to have such great and reasonable taxi options in the city and for those who like walking the promenade walk to the historic area is beautiful. Thank you for your kind comments about Egla, we are pleased she looked after you well. It's also lovely to hear the room was well stocked and you liked our light breakfast room.

We are sorry you found the Small Double Room too small for your stay. We see you booked on a 3rd party site - Expedia/Hotels.com. This website shows clear photos but does not show any room description or detail - unfortunately this is not in our control but a choice of this global website advertising millions of properties. We would strongly recommend always booking direct where room measurements are shown and room details and descriptions. This being said the photos on Expedia/Hotels.com clearly show just the one bedside table and no easy chairs are displayed in any pictures - infact the room you are in is shown in the pictures from 3 angles so you get a full room perspective. We do feel that as such the room is clearly represented. The larger room categories show sitting areas and larger desk space for those who need more space or are staying longer.
Had we known were unhappy with the room we certainly would have looked to discuss upgrade options for you to ensure the remainder of your stay was more enjoyable. We do hope you will rejoin us and please call us directly so we can discuss a better room option for you to enjoy for a longer stay.

Stayed 1 night at the Florence Hotel with husband. Was in room 3. Lived in Southsea previously and had stayed to visit friends. Lovely hotel. Good quality bedding, curtains, carpets - they really do make a difference when booking into a boutique hotel. Had good in room amenities - tv, hairdryer, tea/coffee and bottles of water for use. Loved the l’occitane bathroom products to extent I also went straight to l’occitane to buy identical products for home. Car parking was by permit. Only reason I didn’t give 5* review was tap was loose in bathroom, no extra blanket in room and hubby managed to get most of floor wet when showering as glass surround wasn’t big enough. But this shouldn’t take away from how great this hotel is. Staff should be very proud.

Dear Ann, thank you for your review.
We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that so many things you found to be of a high standard. As you can tell from this, our standards are indeed high and we will definitely be looking into your report of the loose tap. We also would have of course provided extra bath mats for the bathroom floor and an extra blanket had these been requested.
We appreciate your kind comments and as you mention, our staff take pride in their work which is why they are always happy to help and ensure that every guest has the best possible stay.
For your next booking, don't forget to contact us directly for the best price.

Don't whatever you do book what they describe as a 'small double' room. We did this over the phone directly with the hotel, as they request in most of their tripadvisor replies. What they don't tell you is that a small double is basically a single room with a small double bed. There is not enough room for 2 people to sleep in such a small bed or get ready in the mornings. I'd expect a bit more for £183.50 per night!
The overhead shower is lovely, as long as you don't open the door too far, as it then bashes into the toilet bowl.
I did bring these issues up with the receptionist when she asked if everything was OK when we checked out - her response was to rudely advise us to look at the website before booking, which we had done. She really couldn't care less, as a result we would not return.
The breakfast was good with a good choice of hot options, with toast, fruit & cereals.
The staff apart from the checkout receptionist were warm & friendly.
The hotel is a short walk from the seafront & Southsea town centre. There is onsite parking or parking permits are issued by the hotel for the length of your stay.

Dear Nicky

Thank you for your review left about your stay over Victorious weekend - the busiest weekend of the year in Portsmouth. Hotels are at a premium price with some standard chains charging in the region of £300 per room for a basic bedroom with no breakfast included and no parking included. The event attracts tens of thousands of people to the city. As discussed on the phone booking the room is a Small room. Due to budget restrictions noted when you booked you did not want to book the Executive King room recommended and were happy just to be 5 minutes walk from the Festival having stayed further out the prior year and wanting something convenient and close by. Some time later you extended the stay from 1 night to 2 nights and again we reminded that this was a small double room. We do advertise the rooms as small both in the title and description and the measurements are clearly displayed online. It is also noted on the follow up confirmation that the room is small, of which two confirmations would have been sent. The first for one night, and later for two nights.

I am sorry you felt the receptionist was rude to you - I can assure you she certainly does care or would not have felt the need to ask how your stay was. She suggested that we have a range of rooms and they are clearly displayed on the website - clear photos and room measurements are provided. As you note you had checked the website prior to booking and seen the room title, description and measurements. We are always disappointed when guests are unhappy with any staff interaction as this is such a key part of a boutique hotel stay so we apologise for any miscommunication - our staff would never intentionally upset a guest.

I am glad all other aspects of the stay met your expectations - breakfast, other staff, location, parking. It is a real shame as I am sure if a larger room was booked your stay would have been 5 star. We are sorry that you would not return due to feeling that one of staff did not care about your stay when so many other aspects were positive and enjoyable.

We would be glad to welcome you back in a larger more spacious room that would better suit your requirements and would match your budget on a different weekend which has less extreme demand within the city making rates more reasonable.
