“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2009

Starting with the good bits (easier)- The inn is located in a very nice area, very easy to find.

We must say the English Breakfast was very good, the other options not as much. There was not enough variety and it was not at all satisfying. A good point was the very friendly staff who served the breakfast.

Now for the important bits- The least one could ask for, especially on a very cold winter night is heating, right?
Well, not according to The Clothiers Arms.
Around about 9 in the evening we noticed the heating started to die off. Asking the staff if they know of the problem they replied quite simply that there is a timer for the heating. And when will it re-ignite? In the morning, they said. How ridiculous that when it's below -3c outside they should be skimping on heating. Letting them know how ridiculous such a measure is, they agreed to turn the heating on especially for us. Not very welcoming...

I have never stayed at a place which felt the need to provide only 1 of the guests with a bath towel.
We booked our double room as a couple, why only 1 towel?

  • Disliked — No heating, no bath towel

Just stayed the one night as attending a wedding party nearby. We had the double with patio doors out onto a bit of a garden at the back - only problem with that is you can't have a window open at night if you like a bit of fresh air and we do!. Room and bedding were clean enough, but the carpet was a bit stained by the patio doors. Bathroom a bit dated, but on the plus side security was quite good coming back into the property at night.

Staff were friendly enough, check-in is at the bar and breakfast in the pleasant restaurant at the back was nicely cooked.

Looked like most of the rooms were full while we were staying so it's obviously a popular pub and certainly the menu looked good even though we didn't have chance to eat there. So, all in all, a reasonable choice at good value, but I wouldn't rave about it.

  • Liked — Nicely cooked breakfast with papers to read and 10 mins walk to town centre.
  • Disliked — No window to open at night for fresh air and wouldn't have left patio doors open on ground floor.

I had to visit some old friends a few miles from Stroud who could not put me up and this accommodation could not have been bettered for the price. I had a room in the new part round the back and although there were no views of the stunning scenery it was clean, tidy and very cosy with tea/coffee facility, flat-screen TV and shower. The staff were all very friendly, and being on holiday, in addition to cereals and toast with preserves I chose a cooked breakfast, it was enormous and well cooked, just the thing before walking all around the hills. The range of evening meals was excellent and again the quantity and quality was first class, as was the choice of beers on offer. Just a few minutes walk from the town centre and bus and train stations it is far enough outside the centre to avoid the rowdy brigade. There is a play area for children. I shall be returning here without a doubt.

We were 3 couples staying 3 nights in this lovelig Bed & Breakfast.

All our rooms was very clean and comfortable. We can specially recomment the room that has its own little garden outside. The breakfast was exellent, thanks to friendly Patty that made is for us every morning.

We tried one meal in the pub and the food and price was good.

We had a good time and enjoyed our stay very much in the Clothiers Arms and will highly recommend it to other travellers in The Cotswolds.

  • Liked — The rooms and the breakfast
  • Disliked — That breakfast only was served to 08.30 am

We were looking for a Bed & Breakfast as a base while we toured the Cotswolds and my daughter recommended the 'Clothiers Arms' in Stroud . Best piece of advice I have ever taken!

The room we stayed in was cosy and comfortable. The pub, which is freehold and carries a quantity of different beers, some quite esoteric, was equally as cosy with friendly and efficient staff.
However, the jewel in the crown, is the restaurant. I have eaten in countless restaurants ranging from ‘greasy spoons’ to 5 star ‘luxury’ and I rate this one as one of the very best.

Why I rate the Clothier Arms restaurant so highly is that the food is not only well presented but it has TASTE! Too many so called high class restaurants profess their food has that 'homemade taste' which everyone craves but rarely deliver. The Clothiers delivers it with spades

We enjoyed ourselves on our Cotswold sojourn but it was made that much more special with our stay at the Clothiers Arms. Well done and we will be going back!
