We were staying at a B+B in Stow on the Wold with friends as it gave us easy access to Blenheim Palace for Countryfile Live. Even though this was mid week we found many of the restaurants were busy and we would need to book in advance. Unable to get in at The Old Butchers we booked at The Old Stocks Inn. The dining room was nicely set out with tables not too close together. Shortly following ordering we were brought bread and told the butter was chicken butter. I put it on my bread and tasted it and did not like the flavour, it tasted of chicken fat, so scraped it off. The bread was good, but I can't really understand why this butter was offered, surely it would be better to flavour the butter with something everyone, including vegetarians, could eat. Apart from that the service and quality of the food was very good. We did not like the fact that the service charge was added. We always tip unless there is a good reason not to and would have done so here.

Dear Janet

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent meal at The Old Stocks Inn.

I do apologise if you were not a fan of our signature chicken butter. We do offer local Netherland Farm salted butter to our guests who are vegetarian or do not care for chicken butter. We would have gladly replaced your sourdough bread and butter to suit your taste had we known.
This butter is generally very popular with our guests and does add a level of intrigue and difference to the usual restaurant offering of oil and vinegar or normal butter which is why we offer it. I am sorry that you did not enjoy it. As this is a free added extra for our guests, it is disappointing to read that this has formed the main bulk of your review content and was the aspect of your experience that you found most dis-satisfactory.

I am pleased to read that the remainder of your meal and service was very good and that you did enjoy your experience on the whole.
With regards to the service charge that is added, this is a discretionary amount and is completely in your gift to add or omit. Our team do work very hard, but they do not work for tips, they work for satisfaction of a job well done so never would a request for service charge omission be met with bad grace.
To reassure you, all service charge is collected and divided equally between team members each month in all roles within our hotel. It is not withheld by management as some establishments do and is sometimes a concern for customers when paying it.
We kindly request our guests to tip what they feel they would like to and the service charge is merely a suggested discretionary amount. We apologise if this has offended you or in any way made you feel uncomfortable.

I hope that we can look forward to welcoming you back again before too long.

Kind Regards,

Charlotte Tuck

We came across the Old Stocks on Facebook. And what a gem it is. Great decor, friendly staff, gorgeous rooms, all well appointed. Our room, No 16, was a house room. It was spacious, and really well equipped, Nespresso machine, Ruark DAB radio, inclusive mini bar, Joes Company Teas and Aromatherapy Associates in the bathroom.

We had dinner there the first night and it was faultless. The other advantage is that within walking distance there are plenty of other restaurants.

Highly recommend... however ... and this is a personal thing ... there were a number of children chasing around the corridors from one of the larger rooms. Didn't ruin the stay, but did detract from the peaceful setting.

But otherwise ... perfect!

Most reviewers rave about this property and, based on that, we stayed for two nights at the beginning of a recent UK vacation. The welcome on arrival was very friendly. The gentleman who greeted us couldn't have been nicer. The room was quite attractive but sisal carpet was stained in places. Nespresso machine always a nice touch. Bathroom was very nice. No complaints there. The room category we booked was their top, so room was a decent size, but it was quite noisy. We unfortunately could hear every move above us and were directly over the outdoor patio/beer garden. Wanted to throw our windows open to the beautiful country air but had to be cognizant of noise and some cigarette smoke. Not ideal for us, though I did notice that the hotel discourages people from using the patio after 9:30 or 10 pm, which I appreciate. Some guests didn't observe this but usually the noise didn't go too late. It just wasn't the best set up for us as we enjoy a quiet room especially while staying in the countryside.

Food was ok but I did not think it merited any special praise. We had dinner and breakfast. Breakfast in particular was crowded and stuffy. Coffee was straight up awful. Food was perfectly fine but other factors really detracted from the overall experience. The hotel might want to consider adding windows that open in the dining room, or better ventilation. The second day we decided to try a cafe down the road which was more relaxing for us.

The hotel decor was stylish but not super comfortable. But the restoration of the actual building was lovely. Better focus on comfort and quality of furnishings rather than just trendy appearance would improve the guest experience.

On the whole, I appreciated some aspects of this inn but felt there were deficiencies as well. We would have been more comfortable elsewhere, but I can see that this place would appeal to some more than it did to us. The owners seem to have the best intentions and they have restored a historic old building. The room amenities are good. I think we've become a little too spoiled in our middle age, but a younger demographic or those who like to be a bit livelier than us in terms of socializing at their hotel would probably really enjoy it here.

Dear Sir

Thank you for taking the time to write us feedback following your recent stay with us at The Old Stocks Inn.
From the description you make of the room, I can deduce that you stayed in Amazing Great Room - Number 10. This is a lovely rear facing room, but does open onto the garden so during the Summer months can be impacted by guests enjoying dinner and drinks on the terrace. As you say, we do discourage drinkers outside past 9.30pm as we want our hotel guests to enjoy their rooms and have a peaceful experience.
I am sorry that this room did not suit your particular preferences and I would suggest if you were able to return for another visit, trying Room 4, 15 or 21 as they are front facing and much quieter with different sofa's and furnishings. As all our rooms are different, we do like to think that certain rooms suit different people and their personalities.
It may well be that this room was not quite the right fit for you and we are disappointed that this has affected your opinion of The Old Stocks Inn on the whole.

As we are a market centre located Inn we are not a typical countryside escape hotel and so we will not suit those guests looking to find acres of quiet garden and land around the property, but we are ideally situated for guests looking to be in the heart of a beautiful Cotswold village and have their pick of shops, restaurants, pubs and more right on their doorstep.
Perhaps this wasn't quite right for you on this occasion, and I am disappointed that your expectations have not been met but we are very clear with our description.

Regarding your comments around breakfast and coffee I can reassure you that we have changed our coffee supplier for breakfast filter recently as our supplier had a discontinuation of our regular coffee which we have been using for 2 years. We equally were dissatisfied.
Breakfast can be a tricky one for us if all 16 bedrooms decide to dine at the same time. Because we like to offer complete flexibility for our guests, this is difficult to determine in terms of how busy the restaurant can be at any given point for breakfast. Often no two days are the same and we can be very busy at 9am one morning and the next day busier at 8am.
That said, we space our tables well, we manage our dining room well and we make sure all our guests have a full, well stocked buffet and hot drinks on demand whilst waiting for hot freshly made to order breakfasts.
I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your breakfast experience at The Old Stocks Inn on your first morning. I'd like to think that if you had had breakfast the second morning, you would have been more satisfied, especially if we were made aware of you wanting a quieter experience, we could have accommodated you in the garden or reception or library?
It is always very difficult to rectify situations in hindsight and I wish that we had been made aware of your concerns during your stay so that we might have been afforded the opportunity to alter aspects of your stay to your satisfaction.

I do hope that you might choose to stay at The Old Stocks Inn again in the future. However, I appreciate if we might ultimately not be your cup of tea.

Kind Regards,

My thought upon walking into our room was, "I wish we were staying longer!" The room was simply put amazing, the service unbeatable and there were little touches that made us feel at home. They had music playing when we entered the room! Free drinks (having already asked us ahead of time what we preferred!) They even had a portable crib ready for our toddler! My mind was blown and my travel (and life) weary body felt at peace. We quickly ate our scrumptious dinner which they normally don't allow outside of the restaurant but they brought up to our room, course by course! And then put our little one to sleep and had a bath in the gorgeous claw foot tub! Our room (#4) was beautiful and the seats at the windows allowed for us to take the in the summer breeze as we relaxed before heading off to blissful sleep.

I just want to say to give perspective, we travel a lot and well! This is definitely towards the top of our list of favorite hotels!
