“Another wonderful stay!”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

My partner and I had a wonderful stay here last weekend, we had an amazing room in the main house - room 128 which was huge with beautiful views. My parents were also staying in room 126 which was just as lovely. We had fantastic service throughout our stay particularly at dinner and the food always blows us away! The only little thing is that we think there needs to be a permanent member of staff at the bar so that it is not left unattended, with people waiting, for any length of time. Our stay was over far too quickly and we can't wait to return to Wyck Hill House.

We recently spent a 2 night spa break at Wyck Hill. Our garden room, number 17 was a beautiful, light, large and airy room on the first floor, with magnificent views across the rolling countryside. HOWEVER! beware the bathroom. We were warned when we checked in that you must mind your head on entering the bathroom. There is in fact a suspended boxed in unit, presumably hiding a water tank that catches you just at forehead height if you are of average height- 5'8 or taller. If less than 5'4 you won't have a problem. But it is dangerous, particularly when wandering in during the night. We could have asked to change rooms, but the room itself was lovely. I would not want to spend a week with that bathroom though. The food in the restaurant was excellent and an amuse bouche was served both nights. Apart from the fish of the day, the menu did not change, so again if there for several nights you might want to eat out occasionally. The staff were all most pleasant and helpful. The only downside of this lovely country house was the bar, which was dark, stark and unwelcoming. It had a 60's style bar front with a dark brown studded pvc panel. we had to wait for the barman to appear - presumably from somewhere more cheerful! We weren't asked if we wanted another drink as he disappeared again shortly afterwards. There were a couple of people in the bar, but the furniture was dingy and uncomfortable and not what you would expect from an otherwise excellent hotel. Let's hope it's next on the list for refurbishment.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are within the main house. The Orangery & Coach House rooms are annexed, so you cou...

We stayed here for a 3 night Xmas break and we thought the hotel was great. We were allocated a table for dinner for our whole three night stay, which was a great idea, because you didn't have to worry too much about arrival time. Actually, we lucked in and were given a table in the orangery with a view of the countryside, but all the tables were well placed, except perhaps the one just inside the main door!

The service was attentive and the food was good, although the fish we had for Xmas lunch was a tad on the dry side.

My one big gripe was the dreadful piped music in the dining room - breakfast AND dinner! The Xmas songs (not carols, mind) were ok when we first arrived, but began to pall a bit by the third day. For our last breakfast, however, they were playing Frank Sinatra on a loop, and it was simply appalling. I filled in their questionnaire mentioning this - what on earth is wrong with silence? Or alternatively something soothing in the background if hotels MUST play piped music. But three days of Xmas songs followed by Frankie was almost too much to bear and rather spoiled an otherwise pleasurable stay.

But one thing I should mention especially about the service at this hotel. In their library they had a reproduction of an old book written by one of my antecedents, and they happened to have two copies of it. When I asked the manager where I could get a copy, he looked into it and instead of giving me details of where to buy it, he gave me the second copy with compliments! Wow! Very much appreciated I must say and unexpected too. Many thanks

Room Tip: We had one of the garden (cheapest) rooms, but were lucky enough to get one on the second floor with...

We popped in here for lunch last week Just a simple bar lunch but the oak panelled bar and the the period furniture, the ambience and pleasant staff made it a place to remember. The thing is you can spend the same amount of money (under £20 for 2) and more, in much worse surroundings. And there is a nice walk in the grounds with good views.
Can't see why people ever want to take lunch in naff overpriced high street cafe's and bland franchise restaurants when this kind of place is around. Most people would not dream of calling at a good country hotel to eat but our experiences show that they are good value for money and classy to boot.

Room Tip: Didn't stay.

Stayed here for one night with my mother, we had a large beautiful room overlooking the grounds, the service was excellent, and the dinner was out of this world, will bring my husband next time as it is also a very romantic place, would be fantastic for a wedding too. I give it ten out of ten.
