We’ve eaten here at breakfast, lunchtime and in the evening, and the standard of all meals has been consistently excellent.
The menu is varied, surely catering for all tastes, and the staff are very pleasant.

This is the third time here over the years. It’s a place of great history and charm. The dining room has real character and a beautiful fireplace (if booking avoid the smaller room which isn’t anything like as good; make sure you have the main room).

Service is very good and though the waiters are black tie it’s relaxed and friendly.

The good quality is good and very well presented but actually lacks a depth of flavour: the kitchen seems to needs to use more herbs and spices to give a little more punch.

To start we had the soused mackerel and beef carpaccio followed by skate and lamb for mains. As said well presented but lacking real flavour.

The wine list is very good and has a wide selection.

Prices are generally based on the number of courses. For three course with wine we paid £128 with service which compared to London wasn’t bad.

By comparison we found the food at The George of a higher standard but that compete with the period character of here or the standard of service.

Thank you for your review. The Mermaid has been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for the last four years. The award is a measure of the quality of both food and service. We will share your fulsome praise for the service, ambience and wine list with all the staff concerned. We are always excited to receive awards, but the praise from our guests means more.

We note your observation regarding flavours, they too will be shared, but as ever, it is a matter of taste.

We do hope we can welcome you again for a fourth experience at The Mermaid Restaurant.

The Mermaid Inn is a maze of rooms, all unspoilt and full of atmosphere.
We had a wonderful meal here. Salt cod was delicious, as was the smoked mozzarella for starters. The cote de boeuf was superb. Staff were great and the wine waiter was happy to recommend something delicious at a very reasonable cost. We were too full for a dessert which looking at them was a real shame!
We were pleasentky surprised by the bill for what was an excellent meal.

Stayed here with friends to celebrate my birthday and loved the great historical relevance of the hotel. The staff were all fantastic and very accomodating. The food was excellent - very tasty, however far too much for two of us to share the venison dish. It was beautifully presented like a medieval banquet. The breakfast was also very tasty.
