This fascinating collection of toys and models, with a bit of an emphasis on model trains, has gasps of, "I remember those," etc coming from any visitor over about forty! Do make time to visit: it is under the rail station forecourt and easy to visit at the beginning or end of a trip to Brighton. Our luggage was kindly stored behind the desk for us, but I doubt they can take much at a time. Photography permitted. Friendly people.

Firstly a nightmare to find....overpriced compared to some of the gems in Hastings, a range of cars and train models but the information needs to displayed in a more up to date way to gain interest, all the slots needed extra money to play, hubby put coins in and it didn’t work! Not much in the way of interactive displays for children, it did not take long to go around and we had a better time going around the flea market in the town where there was a range of almost the same old toys! Don’t put yourself out to go there, disappointed

Hello Dena,

Thanks for your review and I'm sorry you were disappointed with your visit.

Firstly, we go to great lengths to give clear instructions on how to find the museum on our website (even including a video). Further to this we currently have two huge banners up outside Brighton railway station pointing the way to the entrance of the museum but apologies if these were not clear enough.
As an independent Museum and a charity, unlike many of the museums in Brighton (and Hastings) we receive no external funding from the council so rely entirely on money from admissions to stay open. With a family ticket priced at £14.00 which covers up to two adults and three children we feel that we are very reasonably priced compared to many other Brighton attractions.
Our 'end of the pier' slot machines all date from the 1940s or 1950s and do need 10p to play. They have been altered many times in the past to stay up to date with 'modern' coinage and as such can be a little temperamental sometimes (to be expected of mechanisms nearly 80 years old). We do check these machines regularly but it's impossible to catch every issue so we rely on our visitors letting us know if one of them fails to work correctly, at which point we will come and sort out any problem immediately and refund any money caught up inside while at the same time giving people a chance to see inside these great old machines. Did you report the problem to the staff at the time?
We do appreciate that our collection and displays, because of their age and value, have limited interactivity and we try to counteract this with various quizzes and activities for children to give them a focus while they go round and we normally find an average visit for a family will take between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the level of interest in the exhibits but some of our visitors have been known to spend a full afternoon here, or longer...

I'm glad you were able to find something else to enjoy in Brighton once you had left the museum. The Fleamarket is a great place, but I would be surprised if the toys available there were of quite the same quality or value as the exhibits here (some of which are worth in the tens of thousands of pounds). However if you did, we'd be very interested to hear about it!!

Thanks again for your feedback and your visit.

The museum is run by volunteers who are friendly and have a lot of knowledge about the exhibits. there are over 10,000 pieces in the museum - dolls, teddies, trains, planes, helicopters, old Corgi/Dinky vehicles, Dolls Houses, puppets, Meccano, train sets and so much more. It was like an Aladdin's Cave of Childhood and well worth the £6.50 entrance fee. Also remember to being a few 10 pence coins to put in the old machines.
Pure Nostalgic joy.

Hi Les,
Thanks for your great review - we are so glad you had such a good time in the museum! Our location, underneath the railway station normally helps regulate the temperature but because had such a hot summer this year it did get a quite warm a couple of times in the museum!

This nice museum is very nice on bad weather.
Due to its location right below the Brighton Station it is good to reach via bus or train.

The staff is very friendly and can present a quiz for kids in multiple languages.

It is interesting to see the evolution of English toys over the time.
