Small but well worth a visit. I spent a very enjoyable hour here. Kids would love it but mainly it's a fabulous store of memories. Excellent model railway exhibition. The staff are friendly and helpful. Recommended.

Thank you for your feedback giving us the opportunity to let people know that, unlike other museums which are free, we don't receive any financial support from the local council, government or other public funding. We are a registered charity and are entirely dependent on our admissions and sponsors along with our volunteer staff - so we are very grateful to all our visitors for helping to keep the museum open.

There are over 10,000 items on display in the museum - alongside the trains there are soft toys by Steiff, large display cabinets for Meccano, a collection of period dolls and dolls houses, Victorian pretend play toys, a Pelham Puppet area, model ships and boats, an extensive collection of diecast vehicles by Dinky, Spot-On and Corgi, Britains lead figures throughout the museum in every conceivable character - circuses, zoos, farms etc, building sets, two working train layouts, several penny arcade machines, and many working scale models of planes and helicopters hanging from the ceiling.

There are also quizzes and trails for children of all ages to do as they go round the museum and a couple of more challenging ones for adults.

Our visitors often comment there is something here for the whole family - we are sorry to hear you seemed to miss so much.

This Museum boasts a very good collection of toys over the generations, its a little overwhelming to take it all in so I'd suggest taking your time around the place and having a real good look at everything (there's even stuff to see on the ceiling!)

Could have done with a bit more information points, I didn't find there was much information there to read.

Hi Rach,
Thank you for that great review - it is definitely worth looking up in the museum, all the planes and helicopters hanging up are radio controlled, can you believe?!

Thank you too for your useful feedback about wanting more information, we do have the tablets around the museum where people can access information about the collection but we will review other ways we can do this.

I can feel model trains dominating the place. And honestly some machines requiring 10p for each run on top of the £6.50 admission is slightly extortionate (The train model operating buttons are free). Good if you have rail-enthusiastic boys and do not afford to go to those bigger model-lands in France or Germany.

Whilst trains are an important part of our collection, there are over 10,000 items on display including soft toys by Steiff, cars and other vehicles by Dinky, Corgi and Triang Spot-On, Britains lead figures such as zoos, farmyards, circuses, Disney and every other conceivable figure, a Pelham Puppet area, detailed dolls houses, pretend play items, dolls, construction sets and Meccano to give a flavour of the rest of the museum.

We are also a registered charity and do not receive any money from the local council, government or external funding bodies and are dependent on admissions from visitors, as well as our wonderful volunteer staff and sponsors who help keep the museum open.

We are very grateful to all our visitors for their contribution.

It took us an hour to look around, which was great. Plenty of different toys to see and realise you had some of them when you were a child. It’s small but has a lot packed in the area. Would highly recommend the experience.
