“perfect rural UK rental”
Reviewed 7 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

In the past few years, we have been doing a lot of traveling in England and when possible we stay in self-catering accommodations. We like to find a central base from which to tour a region and stay for three or four nights. Our last stop was at The Gables in Berwick St.John, Dorset. [I’m an actor by profession and if I could start all over again, I would change my name to Berwick (Berry to my friends) St. John. I’d be taller, thinner and play leads]. Anyway, the point is that we are pretty experienced self-caterers. But when we walked into the Gables, we were completely gobsmacked -- the place is beautiful, incredibly spacious, and immaculately kept. There were fresh roses on the kitchen table and in the master bedroom. The refrigerator was stocked with two bottles of wine, clotted cream, apple and orange juice, and milk. The cupboard was stocked with tea, croissants, scones, cookies and whole grain bread. The views are stunning. The owners, Louise and Richard Hall, are very gracious. When I mentioned in an email that we were interested in seeing sites connected with Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy, Louise immediately sent us a packet of information detailing both authors’ connections to the area. The village itself is tiny but very pretty and at the center is The Talbot Inn. We stopped there for directions and both the half-timbered exterior and the burnished, perfectly lit interior are like a set design for the platonic rural English inn. But don’t count on it for sustenance -- as far as we could tell, the only time it was actually open was the moment when we needed assistance. It’s sort of like Brigadoon.
