We stayed at Kethla house for one night during the farmers weekend. As we hadn't stayed in Torquay at this time of year before we were a little apprehensive due to reports we had read from the previous year. When we arrived at Kethla house we got a very warm welcome and we were asked to register (which I have never done before at any b&b I have stayed at) so I thought it a little strange. after registering we were shown to our rooms. The hallway and stairs were in good order and everything was nice and clean, our rooms were on the first floor and on entering the room I felt as if I had gone back in time. The first room was clean and tidy and perfectly acceptable. The second room however had been recently painted and there was still a strong smell of paint lingering around. Our friends stayed in this room and said that other then the smell, the rest of the room was fine and the bed was very comfortable.
The only negative was the female proprietor, we went out for a meal and then hit the pubs and bars we finally got in around half 3 in the morning via a pitstop at the local garage for some crisps (as you do). When we arrived at the B&B, this lady came up to the rooms and asked us if we had a takeaway with us. We hadn't as we only had the crisps from the garage but I don't think she believed us as she said "are you sure?". I took a bit of an offence to this line of questioning at this time of the morning. Even if we did have a takeaway with us why would she want to know? The B&B does not state anywhere that you are not allowed to bring food back to the rooms with you. She must have waited up for us to get in to see if we had brought food back with us which freaks me out somewhat. I wonder if all guests get this treatment. This really upset me actually and as I result I didn't want to go down to breakfast the following morning so we all went hungry.
In summary I would say that this B&B is for the older generation and not for people in their 30's.

Just returned form Torquay after 3 days what a friendly welcoming from Lisa & Andy the B&B was more than we expected the rooms were spotless and a pleasure to use rooms were kept clean and tidy & you get a decent breakfast in the morning which was very nice. Lisa and Andy went out of their way to make us welcome. The B & B is very well located we traveled by train only 5 minutes walk from the rail station the shops were just a few minutes away & only 10 minutes walkaway to the Harbour We would highly recommend this B&B to anyone staying in Torquay. We like to thank Lisa & Andy for such a enjoyable stay.We Would stay here again

Room Tip: we had the (Superior Ground Floor Superking Double room en-suite) which was very good and a large b...

WARNING THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY IN ADVANCE AND YOU HAVE LITTLE COMEBACK! We arrived to a very friendly welcome from a very talkative host, we were the only customers and the B&B had been full the previous day. The owner asked us if we were smokers, which we are - not a problem. Our room was ok - very dated and basic on the ground floor. Breakfast was very nice. We received a phone call from owner in the morning, whilst down at town centre with our young daughter asking us to come back immediately and pack our bags, as the owner thought we had been smoking in the room - we hadn't. Our young daughter was very upset, as she thought she had done something wrong. The owner Lisa said that she found cigarette ash on the window sill outside - we think that the owner has asked us to leave so that she can have a Sunday off as she had been busy all week. The owner refused to refund the rest of our stay, despite both of us insisting we had not smoked in the room - I call it stealing. We arranged for the rest of our stay to stay at the South Bank hotel just down the road - slightly more expensive - but a hundred times better. We were able to leave our bags with the owner until our room was available. A proper hotelier

Room Tip: try the south bank hotel instead

The service in Kethla House is very personal and presented from a pleasent and relaxed atmosphere. It is a "no nonse' place to stay, it is very clean en the breakfast is very good and personally provided. The bedrooms are clean and we slept well. It is a place to go back when you stayed there once.
