Owner description: Kents Cavern is by far Britain's most important prehistoric cave used by ancient humans for the last 500,000 years including Neanderthals and early modern humans. The caves are open every day for guide tours, 7 days a week with natural caverns, amazing natural formations, remains of mammoth, woolly rhino, sabre-toothed cats, an Ice Age woodland trail quest, nice shop and cafe with views over the Ilsham Valley. The closest hotel to the attraction is the Gleneagles, inspiration for TV's Fawlty Towers. We are 2km from Torquay Harbour and only 15 mins walk from the South West Coast Path and local beaches, well-known to previous visitors like Agatha Christie, Beatrix Potter, George V, Alfred Wallace and Charles Darwin. Perfect for a rainy or sunny day by the seas, winter or summer.

The history to this cavern and the men who discovered it was very well described in the lively tour.

We visited Kents as a party of two adults, two children and one senior and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of us had been before but we all wanted to go back to do the tour again as it really is incredible. The tour guides are very passionate about the caves, love to answer any questions and add humour to the tour which we all appreciated. The caves have been very tastefully made into a tourist attraction. I think Kents Cavern must be run independently as, unlike most attractions, you don't feel that the place has been ruined or that all they are interested in is selling to you. We all found the tour (which lasts around an hour) was very good value and fascinating.
The cafe has a good selection of snacks and light lunches at good prices and we found the gift shop to be the best in Torquay! Full of souvenirs and gifts for all budgets. So much so that some of us even went back just for the shop.
We took the woodland trail after the tour - it's a short trail but had some good activities to keep the children (and adults) amused. Depending on your level of interest, there is enough at Kents Cavern to keep you entertained for at least three hours.
I think Kents Cavern is sometimes seen as somewhere to go when it's rainy but I'd reccommend it whatever the weather. It's certainly another world underground that is a million miles away (not literally, of course!) from a few hours on the beach.

Thank you very much indeed for this lovely review of Kents Cavern. You are right it is independently run. The cave has been in my family since 1903 and I am the fifth generation of the family to look after this amazing prehistoric cave. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your visit to us and thank you very much for taking the time to write this review.
