We've been here before, but during the day when we had tapas. In the evening restaurant menu. Despite being a little early we were made welcome and seated downstairs. Good varied menu, reasonable wine selection. While we were never hurried, the food came fairly promptly and we had time to enjoy it. The staff are pleasant and seem concerned to ensure that the diners are satisfied. It was a pleasant highlight of a day in Plymouth. It may have wifi, but downstairs nothing wireless works. Part of the charm.

Visiting family in Plymouth, I was looking for a good restaurant and give everyone a culinary treat. I decided on The Chancel based on their menu and reviews and was not disappointed. It’s a smallish, intimate, snug place with really friendly staff. The menu had a good range of selections for both starter and mains including some fresh specials which made choosing very difficult. Our three for starter: a classic prawn cocktail, goats cheese bruschetta and scollops wrapped in chorizo. All were good, but the scollops a mite overdone. For mains the special of venison and port pie with mash sounded delicious and met the expectation, though the pastry could have been more flaky. The steak went down very well and looked a great cut of meat with excellent mushrooms on the side. I opted for the fish stew after a late change of mind and was glad I did so. Monk, cod and king prawns in a flavoursome tomato, orange and fennel broth worked fantastically well and I really enjoyed it! Add to that a good mix of wines from which we had a great veltliner from Austria. Bring too full for a pudding we watched just one of us demolish the waffle covered in loads of bad, sweet things! I would go back, which says it all.

This is a lovely little place not terribly known in Plymouth..
Weve been 3 times now and because of its size is best to book early.
Weve been each time around 6.30.
Although its small its not pushed in in fact bouticque really.
Very easy to get to on all the mail bus routes and shopping centre..
Ideal to combine with a theatre visit because theres lots of parking very near.
The food is really nice nice menu not to big but the presentation and taste is first class.

5 of us went to The Chancel for a quiet Friday night birthday gathering. We were seated downstairs (we have been before in a larger group and were also downstairs), very comfortable and plenty of room. As always the staff were very attentive and very helpful. Our waiter even helped 1 of our party to chose a wine which happened to be £5 a bottle cheaper than the wine she had already chosen!
The starters came out and were fantastic, I had the Lime & Chilli fishcake, absolutely gorgeous and the same was said for all of the group's.
The mains were also amazing, I had the Steak Valdostana which was stunning and cooked to perfection. Again the whole group were blown away by their respective mains! A stunning, huge, Cornish cheeseboard to finish topped off a great night.
We will definitely be going back soon
