Unexpected stay en route to Scilly, booked first and then saw largely bad reviews and thought oh dear.
Reality was that for the budget price I had a lovely room, a super carvery meal, a relaxing drink on a lovely terrace adjacent the sea, and a nice chat to friendly staff.
Highly recommended - what do the moaners expect for this price?

Parts of the hotel have been renovated nicely and the view is fantastic but unfortunately our room (family room with seaview) had not been updated (or thoroughly cleaned- think bird poo on windows and mouldy curtains) for about 50years- (think psychedelic carpet and a bulk buy on yellow paint!) There is no sink in the bathroom or window in the children's seperate part of the bedroom either. The receptionist demanded payment on arrival and explained had made a mistake so instead of agreed £130/night (still overpriced) she now wanted £180/night! The serving staff were wonderful though and only reason I gave more than 1*.

This looks good from a location point of view. However the decor is very dated, moldy curtains and wall paper falling off. Sink in the bedroom and not the bathroom. The staff in the bar were really friendly and helpful. However I can't say the same for the woman on reception. This hotel has great potential given its location and the nice room sizes shame its not up to standard

Room Tip: Get one of the refurbished rooms at the front of the hotel.

Loved our room! Had such a lovely view and a great stay. Disappointed with the lack of parking as this isn't explained on the Expedia page, so ended up having to walk for a while with heavy bags. The bathroom had a slight smell, but bearable. Lovely restaurant and fab night sleep overall.

I arrived in the evening to stay overnight, having planned to take the ferry to St. Mary's. The Location was quite near the quay. That is about the only good thing I can write about this place to stay. I would not dare call it hotel. No people to man reception (either morning or evening), very little conversation or helpfulness from staff. Rooms (I stayed in nr 1 and 22, sadly I booked and paid for both before I had seen the "hotel") were very old fashioned, very much in need of a proper coat of paint, The smell was musty, as well as old cigarette smoke and old sweat. Probably as a countermeasure there was room perfume- sweet and icky- in combination a really interesting bouquet... The carpets were dated and should have been replaced years ago. Both times there were hairs in the facilities, no bin there though. A basin in the bathroom is something not to be thought about, as there were only ones in the bedroom proper. Room Nr 1 seems to be a converted kitchen, tiling on the wall suggestive of that. The windows in that room could only be opened by very tall people or by standing on a rickety table, so I didn't. The curtains were in need of a wash. There are TVs in the rooms, but they are either too big or too small. The floorboards beneath the carpets or the plastic floor covering in the bathrooms were partially loose and a tripping hazard for some. The sheets on the beds were clean, the beds itself could have been sprung much better. During all times of evening and night, there was quite a lot of noise in both of the rooms, sounding partially like motors whirring. Sleep was very hard to come by. I paid quite a lot of money for a bed in a room that I would rqther not have stayed in. Next time I am going to a youth hostel, one does get much better value for money there,

Room Tip: The rooms at the back do not have the noise level from the street, however the backyard is atrocious to look at.
