Shockingly filthy, sick to the stomach

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 1 May 2019via mobile
The excitement of our 3 night stay was over before it had even begun at this hotel when we couldn't even book for dinner as paying guests on first night because the hotel was hosting a so called "gay pride" event over 2 days. For our 2nd night it was impossible for us to remain in our (upgraded best the hotel has to offer B7) suite due to continuous loud bass music vibrating the entire wing and corridors and continuing until 1am from the ongoing event.
The room but especially the bathroom was freezing cold to the point that we couldn't have a shower on arrival and this issue took numerous attempts (visits and phone calls ) before reception took this matter seriously eventually fixing it midday the following day.
Very uncomfortable twin beds were sloppily pushed together leaving the joining zips on the outer sides causing an uncomfortable ridge and gap in the middle so we couldn't have a decent nights sleep. When we tried to investigate the reason for the bed being so uncomfortable we found to our horror the shocking state of the mattress topper we'd been sleeping on, all disguised with a thin sheet on top. We had been sleeping on a grossly, heavily soiled, blood stained mattress topper which resembles something a homeless person sleeping rough would have discarded. Both sides were so badly stained it's impossible to tell the real colour this should have been, which is almost the same colour as the mattresses themselves.
The owner of this hotel would never allow any of his family members to sleep on a bed in the state, so WHY give to paying customers??? If you don't care less you shouldn't offer a service! This is supposed to be a modern 4 star hotel? A status not deserved for a hotel having no proper management in place with unimaginable below decency cleaning issues. The breakfast was the only good thing about our entire stay. The only place we saw signs of good management and we thank the lovely lady who looked after us so well
God bless her.

We're sincerely sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay with us on this occasion, as we know you've visited us several times before. Our housekeeping and management team had addressed all the issues you raised with us during your stay, so we're deeply disappointed to see you left this review. We'll address your concerns below to clarify our position:

All guests receive a 'welcome' email from us ahead of their stay with a recommendation to pre-book parking and dinner at our restaurant. This recommendation is also advised when you check in at the desk to ensure availability at dinner - you declined both of these requests, so unfortunately, on this occasion our restaurant was full that evening. This didn't have anything to do with the MoonBow Gala we were hosting in our ballroom, in connection with Cornwall Pride - who we are proud to support. The restaurant was full due to our other guests pre-booking as advised and our food being sought after in the local area, which we are incredibly proud of.

As our prime location ensures there are several restaurants and takeaway food options all within walking distance, the reception team would have happily assisted you in making another booking had you contacted them.

We apologise if the noise of the music from the evening's event disrupted your sleep, we did offer you an alternative suite room for the night which you accepted and moved into. We're also sorry that there was some trouble with the heating in your room, this was an isolated experience and our team ensured you had two portable heaters until the issue was rectified.

Many established hotels of our size have zip and link beds as these need to be modified by housekeeping depending on guest requirements, our beds come with the addition of a thick memory foam mattress for comfort, we apologise you didn't enjoy your night's sleep in this room. We're pleased you found more comfort in the room you moved to.

Our Head of Housekeeping did speak to you regarding the small stain on our mattress topper, she assured you that it was cleaned as usual but the mark was missed by her team as needing a more thorough laundry service. This has now been addressed with both our housekeeping staff and our laundry company so thank you for bringing it to our attention.

We're pleased you loved our breakfast choices and our friendly and professional team there. We hope you enjoy your future visits to Cornwall and wish you all the best.

Warm regards,
Cath

Very Grand Hotel, Location amazing, the staff were nothing short of excellent, breakfast was the best ever, a multitude of choices, they need to sort out the room service time as the kitchen was closing and nothing indicated this on the room service menu, also received white bread in place of brown !!!!!!!

A large old fashioned hotel that has been extensively upgraded. Stayed for three nights in a sea view room and enjoyed every moment. Newquay town is not very exciting but the beaches are fabulous and the local area gives you lovely walks. We enjoyed Padstow and the coast more and the National Trust house - Trerice as well. Food was excellent, staff enthusiastic and helpful and breakfast could not be faulted.

We had a wonderful night here for my partner’s 50th birthday treat. A lovely friendly welcome from the lady on reception, a gorgeous sea-view room with a balcony and a great dinner. The building has an impressive and stylish interior, and every member of staff we met was professional and helpful. Alan and Christian in the Silks Restaurant for dinner were particularly wonderful! We would definitely stay here again, a short walk to the end of the Headland, and around to Fiscal Beach is recommended.

Myself, my wife and my parents stayed here for the second time, for 3 nights from April 15th. We use the hotel mainly as a base from which we explore Cornwall, and the positioning of the hotel is very good for that. We all believe that this hotel itself is brilliant, the rooms are clean, well laid out and the beds very comfortable. If like us you take up the breakfast included option, then you won't be disappointed. The options available to you are immense, you can have anything from yogurt to a complete fry up and everything in between. The onsite restaurant is also excellent, offering a good variety of options from the menu. The best thing we find with this hotel is the staff. From the moment you enter, to the moment you leave, nothing is too much trouble for these staff members, they are all very friendly, whilst also very professional at all times. The cost of staying here is expensive, but more than worth it, we will definitely be coming back to this hotel again.
