I like Southern Indian food, as it is different to the food you get in standard Indian restaurants, providing varying flavours and dishes to try. However one of my colleagues was not overly impressed with the last South Indian restaurant we tried. Coconut Grove changed his mind about this cuisine and he will quite happily go again.
Following poppadum’s we ordered a Dosa between us as we had never tried one before, and left the choice to the waiter. Owing to a serving mishap they gave Mysore Masala Dosa , spread with a tangy, spicy red chutney and filled with a mixture of potatoes and onions and a Chicken Dosa. I particularly enjoyed these, with the light crisp pancake and the well flavoured fillings, with the potato one having a kick of chili which slowly came through at the end.
For main courses my colleagues had the Erachi Curry (Lamb) and a Nadan Kozhi Curry (Chicken), The colleague who had the Lamb curry said it was the best Lamb he’d had in a curry, and was impressed with the depth of flavours in the sauce. The other was slightly disappointed with his Chicken curry, as although he said the flavours were good, he said the chicken was a bit dry. My Fennel Flavoured Lamb Curry was exactly as stated, full of aniseed flavour and with a nice hit of heat coming through. The naan bread were really good, being very thin and crispy and with good flavour, particularly the Peshwari that had a good layer of Coconut in the centre. Definitely returning in the future.
