I like Southern Indian food, as it is different to the food you get in standard Indian restaurants, providing varying flavours and dishes to try. However one of my colleagues was not overly impressed with the last South Indian restaurant we tried. Coconut Grove changed his mind about this cuisine and he will quite happily go again.
Following poppadum’s we ordered a Dosa between us as we had never tried one before, and left the choice to the waiter. Owing to a serving mishap they gave Mysore Masala Dosa , spread with a tangy, spicy red chutney and filled with a mixture of potatoes and onions and a Chicken Dosa. I particularly enjoyed these, with the light crisp pancake and the well flavoured fillings, with the potato one having a kick of chili which slowly came through at the end.
For main courses my colleagues had the Erachi Curry (Lamb) and a Nadan Kozhi Curry (Chicken), The colleague who had the Lamb curry said it was the best Lamb he’d had in a curry, and was impressed with the depth of flavours in the sauce. The other was slightly disappointed with his Chicken curry, as although he said the flavours were good, he said the chicken was a bit dry. My Fennel Flavoured Lamb Curry was exactly as stated, full of aniseed flavour and with a nice hit of heat coming through. The naan bread were really good, being very thin and crispy and with good flavour, particularly the Peshwari that had a good layer of Coconut in the centre. Definitely returning in the future.

As you look through this restaurant's menu, there are a lot of dishes you might not recognise if you are just used to the 'regular' Indian food for a English people restaurants that populate our cities. This restaurant does not offer a Pakistan/Bangladesh based cuisine, but one from Kerala in South India. As such, yo7 will not find The 'pick a sauce, pick an ingredient' style of menu common to those restaurants buying in their sauces. Read 5e explanations carefully because you get delicately flavoured food as described.

Which means there are some excellent flavours coming your way. It might be a little off the beaten track and you sometimes get the feeling that it is understaffed and on occasions under heated but there is that something extra in the food that always compensates for the irritations.

So dress a little warmly, take some good conversation with you and enjoy the flavours of Kerala presented to you with pride.

8 of us dropped in on spec on a Wednesday evening, fairly late on, we were seated easily and were made to feel welcome.

The menu is different to your normal Indian Balti's, Bhuna's etc. it's South Indian, a bit more flavoursome, a bit more seafood (plenty of chicken and lamb too, if that's your preference), more coconut etc.

The food is really fresh and light, cooked beautifully and is very tasty.

If you're in Chester and looking for a hidden gem, slightly out of the way, then this is a really good place to go.

It's also excellent value for money, compared to other local restaurants.

Highly recommended.

Will definitely be back!

There are lots of Indian restaurants in Chester and picked this one based on choice of food. Very friendly relaxed atmosphere and really nice food. It also had an IPA on draft which is a welcome bonus instead of the usual gassy lager. Only disappointment was the chutney tray that come with the popadoms....no lime pickle and trying to be too trendy with the rest of the items
