A great piece of open land to let the dog run free, but with a bit of history to, you can still make out the aerodrome and the bunkers where the planes parked up. Close to Yelverton lots of parking, I see their having a 1940's weekend event in September . There's a restaurant and hotel on the corner which used to be the Control Tower

I was staying in meavy just down the road, and someone suggested I went here to walk my pup berry. The tearoom is a little dated and old fashioned but the service was excellent and the cream tea was enjoyed by both of us. I even had a history lesson whilst I was there as they have an authentic spitfire, and various objects from the war, with a lovely interesting tour guide. Surrounding the tea rooms are dartmoor ponies, cows and sheep roaming free, just lovely.

Interesting place a few hundred metres from Yelverton shops and church. Before you go look at the RAF Harrowbeer website via Google and also the excellent Google Earth pictures which show the layout and runways. This WWII fighter aerodrome was built hastily after the devastation of the Plymouth Blitz in a belated effort to protect the city and dockyard from enemy bombers and raiders. Moorland was flattened and tarmacked. Many protective bays were built for the fighters with lots of other protective pill boxes etc. Interestingly the church tower was shortened and the first floor of the row of shops were removed both to reduce the risks of damage to aeroplanes taking off or landing. Decommissioned and redundant at the end of hostilities, the area quickly became a favourite picnic site, an area for informal games, ice cream vans and the runways an acknowledged and much used area for a lot of Plymothians very first driving lessons. An interesting area with some but disappointingly few information boards with details of the not so far off history.Lots of family groups playing football rounders cricket etc, frequent horse riders, often tents, dogs, plenty of kites on breezy days, usually two or three ice cream vans and othe shops at Yelverton and Leg o' Mutton Corner. Great views north and east over the moors.

Why do tripadvisor get basic location details wrong? This site is absolutely Yelverton and not Buckland Monachorum.
