“A lucky break”
Reviewed 26 October 2017 for a stay in October 2017

We found an advertisement for this apartment in a magazine and it looked so good we booked almost immediately.
The apartment is spacious with a double and twin bedroom along with a good sized lounge/kitchen. The terrace is a great place to relax apart from the early to mid afternoon when the sun burns in unremittingly. A good time for a siesta! The apartment is extremely well equipped and the owners provided us with a welcome pack of food, including bacon, eggs, bread, butter and a pot of delicious home made plum jam.
The pool is great although there is not a lot of shade around it. We found that if we went up at about 6 in the evening the water had warmed up and we had about 45 minutes of sun before it disappeared behind the hill.
There is a supermarket in the nearest village, Zagra, but its range of items is somewhat limited. We went to Loja the nearest town where the Mercadona supermarket has a superb wet fish counter. There is also a Lidi supermarket a little further along the road. Loja has a market every Monday
The outstanding pleasure of our two week stay at Molino la Ratonera was making the acquaintance of Coos and Christelle, the hosts. They could not have done more to make our visit memorable and we are so grateful to them.
Coos and Christelle introduced us to the Bar Tokio in Ventorros the next village down from Zagra which does great tapas.
Like everywhere there one or two "buts". Firstly the website states that there are direct trains to Seville, Cordoba and Granada. No doubt there would be if the line was not being upgraded to accommodate high speed trains necessitating the closure of Loja station At the time of writing this is the situation so, if you are looking to use the train to get to these cities, it might be prudent to enquire about the situation either through Kath and Andy or the internet.
It is certainly possible to get to Granada and Cordoba and back in one day but I am less sure about Seville. We managed to "do" Cordoba with no trouble and organised a two night stay in Seville during our fortnight at the apartment. The journey to Seville takes about two and a half hours so if you are taking five hours out of your visit you will be pushed to see the main sights and return before dark. I for one would not like to drive the last two miles down to the apartment in anything less than broad daylight! Seville with its charming narrow streets is picturesque and but a parking nightmare. Our hotel there had a valet parking service and never have I been so glad to see the back of a car! The probable solution is to visit Seville before or after your stay at the apartment.
Finally the road from Zagra. Many people have mentioned the difficulty of driving on what is a pretty bumpy surface. We managed it in an intermediate size vehicle but it does require great care. Given the rapacious attitude of some of the car hire agencies in Malaga who, from what one reads in the papers, would,(if they could) slap on a surcharge for misting up the windscreen, painstaking slow driving must be the watchword.
The area is great for walking and mountain biking and for getting a break away from the stresses of modern living and is thoroughly recommendable.

“Beautiful tranquil place”
Reviewed 19 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Molino de Ratonera is beautiful, remote and very peaceful - ideal if you just want to relax and get away from it all. We stayed in El Granero - spacious and comfortable accommodation with the added bonus of the waterfall beside the balcony. Pool was excellent - very clean and good quality, comfortable sun beds. The food (when we ate in) was excellent and would highly recommend. Only thing to flag and this is just a helpful hint rather than a problem is that the track down to the property is really pretty rough - if you can stretch your budget to a 4X4 I would recommend doing that as we had a little Ford KA which really wasn't up to the job.

We are so glad that we were able to provide such a peaceful and relaxing holiday. The reason it is so peaceful at Molino la Ratonera is that there is no tarmac road with the traffic that this would bring. In an average year we have around 50 families stay here, all of whom hire regular saloon cars, but we accept that some guests will be less confident driving on a gravel track. We are pleased that this did not detract too much from the enjoyment of your holiday.

“Exceeded expectations”
Reviewed 22 August 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Our first visit to Ratonera, the reception from our hosts was very welcoming.

We enjoyed the peace and tranquility, and felt no need to travel far - just enjoy the surrounding countryside.

Nearest 'town' of Zagra met all of our needs plus being able to enjoy eating at Ratonera was icing on the cake.

“Peaceful retreat”

We visited in October and had an extremely relaxing holiday. I was a little apprehensive before going as had read an awful review on the forum. Luckily review wasn't at all fair or accurate. We stayed in a comfortable apartment with a lovely terrace overlooking the waterfall. On the whole we dined in but did eat in the restaurant a couple of times. Food was really good and our hosts charming. Molina la ratonera is a little off the beaten track and requires driving over a rough track but that didn't concern my husband. There is a lovely pool, a gym and little library. Owners have made every effort to welcome their guests. My only tiny tiny criticism is that the bed was a bit hard but some people might like this. Overall I highly recommend this place if you like to get away from it all and enjoy the Spanish countryside.
