Great location just a short walk from Snug cove.
Rebecca was welcoming and friendly and made a delicious breakfast.
Only down side was that there were no locks on the bedrooms so we didn't feel happy leaving anything in the room -would be easy to fix!

We had a very successful alumni weekend retreat--there were 19 of us--and when we left, we were already making plans to come back in a few months time. Owner Dan and his staff were very welcoming. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and there were lots of lots of small and larger reading and meeting spaces along with a small kitchen on the second floor available for use by the guests. This B&B is only about an eight minute walk from the ferry landing so it's easy to get to as a walk-on from Vancouver. Finally, I must mention the food. We had a dinner that would have cost us the equivalent of what we each paid for the weekend. Highly recommended.

For the last couple of years, my colleagues and I have used the Old Dorm for our staff retreat. We've had fantastic experiences both years; the rooms are wonderful, the meeting space is comfortable, and the food is superb. Dan is a fabulous chef!
The setting is so lovely that it would be good for a romantic break, too.

My husband & I recently had the opportunity to spend an overnight stay on Bowen Island at the lovely Lodge at the Old Dorm. I called the Lodge directly and made arrangements through the owner, Dan, a very pleasant guy. Although I was trying for the deluxe main floor "Lady Alexandra", it was booked weeks in advance, so we ended up upstairs in the "Lady Cecila" - also a nice room, a tad small, but a huge ensuite bathroom with giant bathtub complete with bubble bath. Also upstairs and just steps down the hall from our room was a nice second "living room", with TV and books, adjacent to the small kitchen, where one could make supplied coffee, tea,and a small fridge for water. Handy. When we arrived at 3:00 pm we were pretty much the only people in the place, so we peeked about in the other rooms, each tastefully appointed, some with twin beds, most with Queen, most with shared bath across the hall. I think there are only two suites with their own bathroom - so if this is important to you, be sure to specify when you book. Later in the evening, the rest of the guests arrived and the place was full. Breakfast the next morning was really really good - that Dan is a great Chef! A wide variety of fresh fruit, a delicious breakfast egg and bread casserole, yogurt, granola, fresh baked breads, interesting juice selection. Hot coffee. Wonderful, and the dining room very bright and light, facing the back garden, plenty of room for all! Mostly visitors from the Lower Mainland, plus one adventurous elderly couple from Holland.
I would say the only drawback to the stay was that the rooms were a bit noisy, ours being right above the front door, so we could hear when the other guests arrived. (weather was a beautiful Indian summer night, so our windows were open) Also, because this old heritage building is like a beautiful old house (originally used as a dormitory for the steamship staff), there isn't much in the way of noise reduction in the walls, again the other guest s coming down the hallways sounded like they were right in our room! Not much Dan can do about that, I know. Everything else about the place was fantastic. We would stay there again. Dan is a great historian and we had a nice visit with him before bedtime. He also steered us to the nearby "Blue-eyed Mary's" restaurant, right in Snug Cove - the food there was awesome! Be sure to go there for dinner!

  • Liked — heritage building/awesome breakfast
  • Disliked — our room a little noisy - try for Lady Alexandra next time

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2008

My wife and I returned yesterday, July 23, from a 2-night stay at the Old Dorm B&B. While there were certainly some nice things about our experience, there were also some "negatives" that prevent us from giving Dan, the owner, a higher score than simply average.

First the good things:

* I agree with the previous post -- Dan makes an excellent breakfast. Great egg dishes plus fresh fruit plus tasty granola. A fine way to start the day.

* Dan knows the island. He told us in advance to expect poor service at the local pub, Doc Morgan's, and he was right on the money. (For less ambiance but better food and service, go to the "other" pub in town, located up the hill.)

* The interior was decorated nicely upstairs and downstairs, in kind of an island-eclectic style.

* We enjoyed a very comfortable lounge for guests, located on the 2nd floor.

Now the not-so-good things:

* The Lady Cynthia room (our room) was very, very tiny. The room was able to accommodate a queen bed and about 2+ feet of space on either side of the bed -- that's it. No chair, no ensuite bath or even a sink, and only one reading light. The room was way overpriced at $115 per night. (This may explain why Dan's Web site does not feature a link to, or even a picture of, the Lady Cynthia room.)

* Dan's Web site states that the Lady Cynthia room has a "water view of Deep Bay." Actually, the view out our window was of overgrown bushes and trees, with a collapsed shed or something similar directly across the street. There was a microscopic view of water, in the very far distance. Now, to be fair to Dan, he did tell me when I made the reservation that, at this time of year, there's very little view due to the vegetation. Still, Dan shouldn't advertise a view on his Web site -- without qualification -- when the view is almost totally obscured during the months when the vast majority of guests are likely to stay.

And then there's the washroom issue:

* I called 2 weeks ago to inquire about availability for either of the Old Dorm's $115/night rooms (Lady Cynthia and Lady Rose). I asked Dan whether the Lady Cynthia room had a private bath since the Web site states only that the room has a "washroom across the hallway." Dan said that the bath is "almost always" private for Lady Cynthia occupants, but that overflow guests sometimes stay in the room next door and use the Lady Cynthia's bath. He then said that, because the Old Dorm was wide open for the days we requested, he would move my wife and me to the Lady Rose (with a private bath) if an overflow situation occurred and somebody occupied the room adjoining the Lady Cynthia room.

Well, an overflow situation did occur on the 2nd night, but Dan didn't give us the Lady Rose room that he'd promised -- so we ended up staying in the Lady Cynthia room for the 2nd night, too, at the same rate of $115, but without a private bath for that night. Dan's excuse when I brought up his earlier promise? According to Dan, another guest (I presume the occupant of the Lady Rose) decided to stay an extra night or nights, so rather than move that person to accommodate us, Dan decided to accommodate the other person -- despite his promise to me earlier.

I understand that "things happen" and that, sometimes, you can't get everything you expect. But at $115/night for a shared bath/no sink room, Dan could at least have offered us something for the sudden change in circumstances -- a partial room credit for the 2nd night for example, or simply an apology for being unable to follow through on his earlier promise. But Dan did neither, which was both regrettable and unprofessional on his part.
