“Not what it says on the tin”
Reviewed 12 September 2011

We stayed at this lodge in September. I had read all the trip advisor comments and went with an open mind. This was one of 6 places we stopped in Canada. I will start with positives we had a delux lodge, and it was okay. A little small and next to lots of other lodges. They informed us we had a lake view, if you think a view through a range of trees and then a view of the river then yes we had a lake view.

The issues:

1) housekeeping poor never even bothered to tidy the towels etc
2) We booked dinner and it was awful, the restaurant, and the waiters are trying to be something it is not. A beef pie contains pork! The food was indeed overpriced and not tasty.
3) breakfast, yes it may be free but it is poor! No hot selection!

Overall the experience was poor. We left early.

Despite the beauty of the lodge, cabins, riverside setting, mountains, excellent staff and breakfast--- if you want peace and quiet, crave peace and quiet, DO NOT STAY HERE. The train, the trucks, the traffic --- right next to the hotel. Look at any map. The traffic hurls by night and day. If all this doesn't bother you, you'll love it here. If, like me, you were looking forward to quiet, forget about this lodge, or just come by for a visit, and make your stay at Lake O'Hara or Moraine Lake.

First of all: the cabins: duplex and single, the latter with a fire place. We stayed in a duplex: a beautiful, spacious and tastefully arranged room and a large bathroom plus a verandah. All in wood, nice details/decorations, a large comfortable bed, a tea/coffee maker and a fridge, a small table and two chairs and a gas heater. All designed with care. No complains about the cabins thus. But nothing is perfect: for a price that high and for what the advertisements of the lodge say we expected a quiet stay. But no: some (many, actually) cabins are located near a generator unit, either one at the back of the property or at the front of it, near the main building. The humming noise coming from them destroys all the feeling of being in a forest. The noise is especially intensive at night when all other noises are gone. I woke up at night and instead of hearing the wind and the birds (that's what you would expect in a 'secluded wilderness location', I heard the constant humming of the generator, which was quite disturbing (and really rather loud). Perhaps when you use the airconditioning you do not hear the generator, but with the usual summer weather in Field the airco is not needed. I found it disappointing as one of the reasons of staying at the Cathedral Mountain Lodge was to stay in a quiet place in a forest. As for the general location: it's not as much 'secluded' as you would expect either: the lodge is actually near a highway where a construction work was going on (by the end of August; not at night so we did not mind), and the cabins are situated quite close to each other.
And, of course, you do hear at night the ever-present Field freight train, but I heard it just once and it's not something the lodge management can prevent...
Breakfast: you are not spoilt for choice of things but the overall value of food is good. The eggs were fresh, the cereals not from packages, and the bread was good (not the 'usual' toasted bread you find in many of the accomodations, but a proper one, full-grain and white to choose from). Orange juice wasn't great thought, which one would expect looking at the price and the advertisement saying that you are in one of the best restaurants in Canada.
The nearby Takakkaw Falls (10 minutes by car appr.) are really beautiful, one should certainly go there while in Field!
We only stayed one night so I cannot comment on the room service but the cabins were very clean.
And, finally, the prices change depending at what time you come in and who you talk to, so try to negotiate.

We stayed here in July on our summer camping trip. We had intended on staying at the Kicking Horse campground just across the road from this hotel but got there only to find the campground closed due to a winter avalanche that took out some of the facilities. I guess we should have done a bit more research before we got there. Anyhow, stuck for a place to stay and not wanting to drive another hour to find a tent spot we decided to check out the Cathedral Mountain cabins. We were in luck and there was an empty cabin.

The cabins were very clean and nicely maintained. The room we had was small (sorry I don't remember what class of room it was - probably the bottom end). The bathroom was spacious however and a welcome sight after having tented a few days leading up to this.

We had continental breakfast in the morning (included in the room price) and it was good. I think I saw someone else complaining about the juice being from concentrate and no hot options. I didn't really notice a problem at the time, it was adequate and I guess for the price it should have been better.

The location is great. It is easily accessible to the highway and as a result you may get highway noise which does diminish the wilderness experience ... but you are in a hotel so how much wilderness are you expecting? The river the runs in front adds nice background noise and the views are great. The campground across the road is one of our favorites. The location also is a great starting point for day hikes. There are so many good trails a short drive away that it's hard to pick one.

So, overall our stay was nice. We relaxed on the porch and had a glass of wine and early evening. A very nice interlude in our camping holiday.

We stayed here as part of a longer family holiday travelling around Canada. It was by far the worst place we stayed in,despite the fact that we have stayed in a variety of accommodation from luxury( Wick Inn,Tofino ),to family budget condos. This was the 5th of six places we stayed at.
Our major complaint was that the website is very misleading. It is not secluded - it is parallel to the Trans Canada highway and next to the railway. Chairs are set out by the river for guests to admire the view, but if you sit out on them you look over at the road.
We slept badly on all the nights we stayed here( 3) due to traffic and road noise, despite the fact that the river blocks out some of the noise.
The cabin was tiny and we felt REALLY stupid to have spent so much money on it. The beds are uncomfortable,( even our children noticed ),and there is hardly any space inside the cabin. ( We could not even unpack our cases).
The website suggested there was some outside space . There is just the porch and the river to sit by,so not great for children.
There is no resident naturalist , ( as Lonely Planet states).
We ate in the restaurant twice. The menu is over ambitious and therefore very hit and miss. It thinks it is a lot better than it is and is very overpriced.
The nearby town of Field is very sweet and we would recommend the Siding for food,it was all freshly prepared and good value for money.
