CONS - facilities were in very poor condition. Private pool was filled with algae so couldn't use, doors to villa wouldn't lock, toilet came away from the wall, unhygienic environment, no other guests, food was terrible, cats everywhere, bugs/mosquitos in the room due to gaps in windows and doors. For the price paid, we were ripped off. Very dissatisfied.

PROS - staff were very friendly, view was pretty, and hot springs were relaxing.

Advice - go for a day trip only.

Everything was dirty, the hot tub didn't work, the pool was filled with leaves, one day we didn't have running water in the bathroom, rude and slow service, A/C didn't work and the food was horrible. So not worth anything.

On the immediate surface, the hotel seems quite decent, if not very nice. We are on our honeymoon and will have stayed in a total of 5 hotels during our trip to Indonesia. We have absolutely enjoyed some astounding resorts while on our trip but are not hotel snobs by any means. We stayed in a deluxe villa here and the room is definitely spacious --separate tv/dining area, bedroom and most of all our own "private " pool. But the jacuzzi beside the pool is filthy and non-operative, the pool is a bit grimy itself, and there really is no privacy as the general walkway is right beside the pool, only separated by bushes you can look right through. The walls are dirty--there were some curious brown spots splattered outside the pool walls and the light fixtures were oddly crooked. This place has a lot of potential to be quite stunning it's just very poorly maintained.
And the staff is what makes the experience just odd. It honestly feels like a group of inexperienced kids are operating the hotel. No one is interested in any kind of customer service, LOTS of blank stares and a lot of confusion. For example--when arrived to room, gave us complimentary foot massager saying that it was included as is a body massage tomorrow. Called us 5 mins after foot massage and said they were wrong, no massage is included. Went to dinner and with no exaggeration it went back and forth 5 times whether or not our dinner was included (we had about 5 different waitresses and each one said something different--we were the ONLY people in the restaurant too!). We didn't mind paying but our final waitress insisted that the dinner is included in the price of the room so we left it at that. Not shockingly, they insisted we pay for dinner when checking out the next day and the girl at reception of course did not care one iota that we were told numerous times it was included. They also tried to double charge us, insisting we didn't pre pay for hotel but thankfully our amazing tour guide cleared up the matter (took almost an hour and we didn't get involved but the hotel was not helpful). An additional note there was a European tourist with her husband and 2 kids in the lobby nearly in tears from frustration in trying to deal with the hotel staff. She told me that have ripped her off in so many ways and are "scam artists completely without decency or wanting to help"
We only stayed here one night as we were doing the mt Batur trek the next morning and one night was just enough. It's not the end of the world if you have to stay here and the pool is nice if you finished your hike but don't expect the greatest and definitely be prepared for a few hiccups. Stay one night as a pit stop then be on your way.

Luxury is just the name. Do not expect any luxury service and premices.
Our villa was clean but looked dirty. When I read comments dated of several years, nothing has changed!
So many flies in the restaurant and the villa, jacuzzi totally out of work...
We love food and the restaurant is SO disappointing. Many dishes are not available and for the ones which are, you would better avoid! We went to the small restaurant aside, at the hotel's entrance to have suitable, and actually delicious Balinese food (try the tilapia balinese style fish).
This place is ok if want to do the mount Batur's sun rise trek and go to the hot springs and one night should be sufficient.

Room Tip: No specific comment

The Ayu is also the Toya Devasya Natural Hot Spring & Camping Resort. It is same same spread across a large section of lake front with the villas in their own ‘semi’ private area of the resort.

It makes no sense why this place (the villas) has not been reviewed on Trip Advisor since 2015. The whole area is under some renovation which at this stage is landscaping only and mostly focused in the larger open to the public hot spring pools and camping areas. During our stay it was not impacting on the villas nor the vila hot spring pools which are part of the villa complex.

We had booked two deluxe villas, one for my husband and I and the other our son, his wife and 12 month old. After a bit of a shaky start (no water in either villa from arrival until early evening) the water did finally come on in our villa and my son and family were upgraded to the honeymoon suite. Here’s the good and the not so good of our stay.

Villas - the good - are well designed, very spacious and well appointed - two flat screen TV’s with movie channels. King size very comfortable beds with clean crisp linen and new pillows. You walk straight out of each room, lounge/dining, bedroom and dressing room into the large warm spring fed private villa pool. Our deluxe villa pool was larger than our sons honeymoon suite heart shaped pool but his pool deck was larger than ours. And his honeymoon suite villa was larger. Our villas faced east north east - great for beautiful sunrise light coming over Mt Abang. Bathrooms are massive with separate shower area and really large baths. Our sons was a spa bath. The villas are very private with beautiful gardens surrounding them. The not so good - the villas need a little bit of TLC - nothing major or off putting just things like blinds that don’t function, a few small holes in upholstery and a few little other odd bits of general wear and tear. The villa pool spas don’t work and don’t look like they have for ages. In my opinion a waste of space from the get go. Not sure if the bar fridges work - they were not turned on.

Villa grounds - the good. The gardens are well established and beautiful. There is landscaping works happening, not much in the immediate villa complex area. The villa garden leads down to the restaurant and ‘semi’ private hot spring pools which are literally at the lake edge looking out over Mt xxx with Mr Batur behind you. Beautiful. The not so good - I was led to believe that this area of the complex which is adjacent to but separate from Toya Devasya Natural Hot Spring is private for villa guests only. However many day trip foreigners pay to come and use these hot spring pools. The good thing is you have your own private villa pool to retreat to which isn’t as hot but still volcanic spring fed. We were here on a Sunday and the hot spring pools adjacent to the restaurant and villas were emptied, scrubbed out and refilled. A good sign.

Restaurant - the food mostly local is ok, it’s not bad but it’s nothing exciting or out of the ordinary which is a shame because it’s such a wonderful location.

Overall - we enjoyed our stay and extended for an extra night. As already mentioned I have no idea why this place hasn’t received any reviews in almost a year. And don’t understand why most reviews are so negative. We could have had a bad experience in the beginning with no water to either villa, which didn’t look like being fixed quickly. Instead I insisted to speak with someone more senior than the reception staff who were clearly out of their depth, with not a great command of English. Eventually I had a satisfactory and constructive conversation with the owner, who has been away for some years but is now back onsite overseeing the renovations and upgrade. The owner is an astute Balinese businessman, he was very apologetic and accommodating, offering us complimentary dinner and wine and the villa upgrade for my son’s family. Honestly this place has amazing potential. The front desk staff definitely could do with better training. The lobby does not give a great first impression and is in desperate need of an upgrade. It is pricy accommodation, food and drinks compared to other parts of Bali but you pay for the location experience and absolute access to the volcanic hot springs and you are right on the edge of the lake. Final word - BRING YOUR AEROGARD, and I'm not kidding, during the days the flies are out of control.
