“Excellent cat skiing experience”
Review of Mustang Powder

Mustang Powder
Reviewed 22 February 2012

This was my second year in a row coming to Mustang Powder and upon departure I signed up again for next year.

If you are an advanced/expert skier looking for steep and deep, this is the place for you. They offer a wonderful ski experience - friendly staff, huge and varied terrain that allows them to still find fresh tracks two weeks after a snowfall. Public areas of the lodge are very nice and guest rooms are basic but clean and comfortable.

1) If you don't own powder skis, they have a large supply of excellent fat skis for $35 per day
2) You need to be comfortable skiing through trees to enjoy this resort
3) No cell phone coverage but they do offer a sattelite phone ($1.00 per minute) and fairly slow wireless Internet. Some people were able to use Skype.
4) If you are expert skier sign up for "small groups steep chutes"

My husband and I first heard about Mustang Powder 2 years ago, then again last year in Outside Magazine. After some research, we decided we couldn't pass it up! We booked almost a year in advance as they book up fast and furiously!

A shuttle ride, 2 plane rides, another shuttle ride, to the school bus & finally with an hour snow cat ride... we make it to the middle of nowhere at the Mustang Powder Lodge! The amazingly large timber lodge sits in a large meadow surrounded by mountain views and snow that covers everything in sight. Inside we are greeted by staff members taking us to our rooms, introducing us to the dry room on the way. The dry room is a giant space with a corner of Avy Packs, a wall to dry out ski boots, and racks to dry out your wet gear.
Upstairs, we find a large warmly lit dining area with vaulted ceilings & large windows on either side. The kitchen is open to the room and the staff was in full motion preparing dinner. As "first timers," we gushed over the retails items for sale while waiting for our turn at the bar. There we met Megan, the bartending/personal shopping assistant extradinare!
With a total of 30 guests in the lodge, we mixed, mingled, and ate with all the staff working. We instantly felt like a part of a family, on an amazing ski vacation.

Dinner every night was a 4 course meal. Organic beef tenderloin, rack of Lamb and roasted duck were our dinner fare. Breakfast served daily was different everyday. Best of all, make your own lunch. A buffet was laid out each morning to make whatever you wished. Salads, sandwiches, fruits and sweets.

Night One, we received our official "hello" and breakdown of how our 3 days would commence. Morning One, we finish breakfast and learn what Cat we are in and meet our Catmates. We then went through our Avy Training with our guide JP! First an indoor review of our beacons then outside for practicum, literally searching and digging.
Next, loading up "Carlos," the snowcat, our mates, lead guide JP and tail guide Rich.
Let the adventure begin!

For three days, we experienced powder and skiing trees like we never have before. There was not a run without fresh tracks & thigh deep powder! The terrain had something for everyone.....high alpine, trees and steeps. (Although, I do recommend that you be at least an advanced intermediate skier. A beginner would struggle here.)

After three nights of being spoiled with food & drink and three days of being spoiled in the powder, my husband and I found ourselves wishing we had booked the 5 day trip! We met wonderful fellow guests and amazing staff members that we hope to remain friends with and see again soon. Mustang Powder is a very special place. The "monster" has been created and we'll be back soon.

Its very easy to say that we have been raving about Mustang Powder to everyone we know and if you think you would like to try Cat Skiing, want to try out Canada... this is the place for you! Get up there!

I have skied there twice and would highly recommend it. Beautiful lodge, very diverse skiing, good lunches, great owners. A top notch place. Guides are laid back. Easy to get to from Kelowna airport.
