This is the second time we came to Shanghai House while visiting Richmond. The reason being, there are no lines! The service is fast and food is decent.

We came here after failing at getting into the ever busy Shanghai River restaurant. We were actually glad at the end that we came here. The place was also packed with Chinese patrons. They didn't have the dim sum carts like other restaurants. We ordered dim sum from their menu. The hum bao with minced pork and green beans was very good. The service wasn't great but not bad either. We'll come back here again next time we are in town.

Our family (and friends) have been to this restaurant probably more than 50x. Food quality and taste have gone down hill steadily over the last 2 years or so. Lots of free parking at the strip mall but watch out for 30-minute only (marked on the pavement) stalls because I got a ticket one time years ago. Opens early and closes late. 2 very large tables at the back. Most other tables can accommodate 4 persons. Shanghai dim-sum dumplings are freshly hand-made; you can watch them do this near the cashier. Place is relatively clean and wait staff are always friendly and fast. Takes VISA/MC. This is our first review of this restaurant on TripAdvisor.

We were last at this restaurant about 1.5 months ago and the food was so-so. Tonite, we (4 adults and 1 child) wanted to eat Japanese but our usual restaurant was full and there was a long line so we decided to go this frequented Shanghai restaurant and arrived around 07:30PM. Place was about 50% occupied, including the 2 large tables. Surprised with the new menu (see the 20 pics for the complete menu), which has a lot more pictures of the dishes but lots of Chinese and few English words in the menu. Lots of new dishes too from what I remember of the old menu. We ordered and to our surprise, the first dish came out in about 3 minutes - and it was free to boot. This free dish is a wine-sauced chicken organs and feet which 3 adults at the table ate - they said very tasty; I don't like the organs/feet so I didn't eat any. We ordered the sautéed prawn with tea leaves; bean-curd wrapped mushroom (cold dish); stir-fried Shanghai rice cakes with mustard vegetable/meat; pan-fried pork buns; steamed Shanghai dumplings; and baked taro pork ribs. All dishes were excellent and we were pleasant surprised by the quality and taste; certainly much better than previously experienced. I didn't like the pan-fried pork buns because the one I ate had a huge amount of white pepper in the pork which surprised me because this was never like this in this restaurant. We saw the owner and asked if he has a new cook - he just said there are different cooks at different times because of the long hours. After all the ordered dishes arrived and we finished eating, the waitress asked if we want a free dessert - coconut cake (there were 8 pieces but only 1 piece left on the dish in the submitted pic); also very tasty. There were never any free dishes (except desserts sometimes) at this restaurant which probably means a new promotion going on. Rice costs extra and we only ordered 1 bowl - they didn't charge us (see the bill). $74 for 5 is not bed for a very good and full dinner. Yes, there were left over for tomorrow.

We would most certainly come back again soon. Hope they keep the free items coming. No pepper please!

This restaurant is just a skip, hop and a jump south of the Brighouse Terminal of the Canada Line. I found the premises clean and inviting. Service as up to par and the food tasty. Unlike most Chinese establishments in metro Vancouver both Visa and MasterCard are welcome.

My wife is Chinese, so whenever we go out for Chinese food it is sometimes an ordeal because she is so discerning and many so-called Chinese restaurants are not authentic when it comes to their menu. Shanghai House is one of the exceptions. We have eaten there several times when we are in Richmond and never been disappointed. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed.
