We had just a few minutes to grab some dim sum to go early in the day. We stumbled on Red Star and thankfully they were able to oblige. We got several of the standards and each one, particularly the BBQ pork bun, were excellent. We were on a time crunch and asked the host to make our order a priority and she genuinely did by monitoring the progress in the kitchen and running out right away with the finished product!

Another typical Monday, after our workout at the gym, we went exploring for a place to have dim sum. My original plan was to head to Tin Tin Seafood restaurant for dim sum but I decided to head into Yohan Centre across the street. Eventually, we landed up in President Plaza next door and found Red Star Seafood Restaurant by accident.

We were there around 1:00 PM on a sunny Monday and the restaurant was not crowded at all; less than ¼ full.

The 2 of us ordered the following 6 dishes:
• #5 – Sweeten vinegar shrimp paste and coriander dumplings ($6.28) – good dish; tasty. 3.5 out of 5 rating
• #6 - Steamed spareribs with garlic ($5.98) – I have had better elsewhere; tasty but still a bit disappointing. 3 out of 5 rating.
• #18 – Deep fried vegetarian bean curd wrap ($5.28) – another tasty dish. 3.25 out of 5 rating.
• #12 – Pan fried eggplant stuffed with shrimp paste ($6.28) – nothing to distinguish this dish from all the other restaurants; average dish. 3 out of 5 rating.
• #31 – Steamed rice rolls with Hong Kong style mixed sauce ($5.28) – unusual dish with a peanut sauce and yellow mustard (same kind used for hot dogs). Flavour combination worked for me. 3+ out of 5 rating.
• #51 - Deep fried tofu with golden garlic ($8.98) – overpriced / small portion. Soft tofu that has been deep fried; a bit bland. I prefer the firmer tofu that comes with the spicy salt. – 2.75 out of 5 rating.

Tea charge was $1.20 per person.

The total bill before tips was $42.50.

Ratings Breakdown:
• Price and portion size – value could be better on some dishes. 3 out of 5 rating.
• Quality –above average. 3.25 out of 5 rating.
• Taste – inconsistent. 3 out of 5 rating.
• Service – good service. Dishes arrived quickly. Our server had a good command of the English language. 3.5 out of 5 rating.

The overall experience rates an above average – 3.25 out of 5.

It was ok food, nothing extraordinary, but pricy. The staff was ok too, not very fluent in English and didn't quite understand some of our requests. It was convenient location for our family to eat because we stayed in Raddison hotel.

Food was delicious. Service staff attentive and efficient.
Decor/ambiance is average.
Parking on level 3 is free for 3 hours.
It can get busy at times (so is every other restaurant in Richmond).

We went on a Saturday lunchtime so was busy as we expected but we were seated very quickly, unfortunately at a table that was jammed up against a wall. In a effort to squeeze the most customers in I think they have too many tables. There are no carts at this restaurant, you tick your boxes off a very expensive-looking glossy order sheet. There are large TVs in the room showing photos and names of different types of dim sum - very helpful in explaining the 2 extensive pages of items. I have to say I kind of miss the carts, but the room is so packed with tables and chairs there is no room. A little too much MSG left me buzzing but not as bad as a past time I ate there. 5 items for 2 of us for a satisfying lunch was just over $30 so a little pricier than some. But the food quality is very good. The portions are larger than a lot of other places and all the seafood items are absolutely packed with good seafood.
