This cafe has undergone 3 changes of management since I wrote a nice review of it when it was called Ellice cafe. Things have gone sharply downhill since then. I stopped going at the beginning of this year, sick of the previous occupants' dreadful service. The new owners have spent some time and money making the place look a lot better and more inviting. Now they need to have a close look at what's happening in the kitchen.
I think a classic eggs bene is a good test of any establishment. They have three versions,. i chose one with salmon and spinach... the only two ingredients specified on the menu. Then first thing you notice is the white shiny hollandaise.. a sure sign that this is the stuff from a bottle and not home-made.. Then you spot the hash brown underneath the egg and salmon. It seems to have become recently fashionable to include a hash brown on your eggs bene, as well as a muffin or bagel. All this does for my taste buds is to permeate everything with the flavour of the stale oil they've been fried in. And these weren't even home-made hash browns, but the perfectly rectangular ones you get frozen in a packet.
I carefully remove the offending object from each of the two stacks of eggs, fish, spinach and muffin. I prod the poached egg.. the whites dissolve into a watery puddle, but at least the yolks are not overcooked. The salmon is of poor quality.
I will not be eating here again.
