Alba Fucens is the largest Roman site (so far excavated) in the Abruzzo and it is beautifully located. It was NOT the easiest to find but once we were there we enjoyed our visit tremendously. It is free to visit which is always nice, and apart from one guided tour there were very few other visitors. Some of the reconstruction was a bit clumsy, with large 'blobs' of concrete holding some things together, and mosaic floors were not sadly not revealed, which seemed a shame as it would be quite easy to excavate and display - but I guess money has run out. A 5 minute walk away is a very impressive amphitheatre. There was space to park and we had a beer in a garden area overlooking the site afterwards. A good couple of hours - but take hat and sunscreen as there was little or no shade to be found.

This area was recommended to us to visit. We weren't disappointed. There is a historical Church near to the amphitheatre but you need to contact the custodian if you want to see inside.

In the middle of Italy and the Abruzzo lies an Roman city surrounded by the Apennines Mountains
This is a very good example of a complete town that includes all of the "modern comforts" including public toilets.

Incredibly intact Roman village complete with amphitheater. We loved walking around without bumping into any other tourists.

This is a lovely site to visit and out of standard Italian holiday season there is no one around. We had the whole enourmous site to ourselves. The site suddenly appears in the middle of the village. There seems to be no official car park and I think the information point was there but we could not be sure as it was closed. It would have been nice to have some information as to what we were looking at and how it was laid out- however you could feel the atmosphere.
We will go back for another visit as they have still a lot more to excavate!
